Winter 2012-2013 ( UK )

Bloody freezing more like. Just went out for a coffee and wished I'd worn my thermals! :p

I'm trying to avoid putting the heating on,
So last night just moving around the house, three layers of thermal trousers (base, loose, thermal over trousers)
Top was base, wool, thermal top, second thermal top, gillet and a hat.

I was just about comfortable :(
If it gets any colder then it's going to be a bit grim.

Curiously it is normally warmer outside of my house

I predict loads of drama on internet forums, lots of armchair meterologist experts making dire predictions based on awesome logic like 'Summer was rubbish so obviously winter will be as well (I guess that means Austria gets no snow this year as they had a heatwave in Summer), constant updates about the temperature and every flake of snow and then a huge rant when we get 2 days of snow and the government hadn't spent approximately £5bn on stuff to ensure those 2 days of snow didn't cause any problems.

sounds good, problem?

See for me at that point I'd have just thought "I want to be comfortable in my house, I'm putting the heating on and sitting here in my underpants". ;)

I've got no idea what the weather will e like, but I want it to be long, cold and have lots of snow to make up for last year because we had nothing, as well as giving me a decent excuse to stay home, messing about on computers and building an igloo.

Temperatures seem to have fallen off a cliff in the past two days. I went in to sixth form in shorts and a T-Shirt on thursday, I wouldn't be able to sit at home in that now :(

Wet, windy and chilly.

Snow - Probably not (never really snows in Plymouth) {couple of cm is pathetic}
Ice - Oh yes..lots and lots of ice.

Broke the winter coat out today. Was chilly when the wind blew.

My favourite weather forecast is when they say, usually very seriously "there will be a 50% chance of snow.

So, with millions pent on computing power the best you have is "it might snow and it might not" ! :D :)

2011 was a pretty warm winter though from what i remember? yeh its been bad previously but if this year is like 2011 im all for it.

I think there were only a few weeks of serious cold.

Well having run a half marathon in the arctic tundra that was Greenwich this morning, I'm guessing its going to be cold this winter.

Bear in mind that an 'average' winter has the lowest temps in the New Year (brief -5C snap), then the snow arrives in February with overall lowest average temperature for any month of the year (usually around 0C). In March, that tends to clear up.

I remember 1987 up to 1996 being cold winters, lots of snow. 1997 onwards, hardly saw any snow until 2010 really where we've had the coldest winter in my living memory. My dad said that 1981 was his coldest one though. Then 2011 was the mildest one I've known e.g. we had 15C on Christmas Day!

This year, 2012, was a weird one. January continued the mild winter of tail end of 2011. February was mild too, with about 3" snow that stuck for 3 days, that was it. March was normal, and then in April, our proper winter kicked in. Like -5C every night, running well into May! Then temps suddenly went above average for 1 week at the end of May making it feel like summer. June/July/August were a wash-out except for the last week of July.

Winter 2012? Probably just a normal one i.e. what I wrote in the 1st paragraph.
