New car time

Your excluding other running costs though such as: -

Road tax

Seriously? Road tax? Road tax is a non-issue on any of these cars. Compared with the purchase price and other costs, it simply doesn't matter what the road tax is.

The 330i costs less than £100 a year more to tax.

Car Insurance

You are 31 not 17. They all cost about the same to insure. It's not going to be a huge amount less money to insure a 320d.

Will eat more tyres / brakes

Well, not neccesarily. If you drive it everywhere like you've just nicked it then it might but if thats your driving style you probably wouldn't want the 320d in the first place.

You seem to be approaching the purchase of a near 20 grand car with the sort of mentality you'd expect if you were buying a 2 grand one.

Why are you ignoring the fact you are spending almost £20,000 on a car that will be worth perhaps half that in 3 years time, yet happily obsessing over95 quid difference in tax and 60 quid a month in petrol? I don't get it. Either you are bothered about saving money, in which case why the 18.5k budget, or you are comfortable with the amount you are spending, in which case why the focus on small cost differentials?

I do get it - for many people 60 quid a month is a lot of money. As is the £95 a year road tax difference. But these people tend not to be buying £18,500 cars.

We seem to be missing the point of the post, I didnt ask for opinions on engines as Ive already decided im buying a diesel.

Your asking for opinions on how they drive, and since the engine makes up a large portion of the "drive", you are actually asking about engines too. Why are people too proud to take good advice? You've got people on here who have driven/owned these cars and know them inside out, giving you solid advice about them. Why are you throwing these well informed opinions aside? All we're trying to do is get you in the best possible car for the money, however you don't seem to want the best car for the money, you want a car which you have picked out using flawed logic and are now too proud to say "hmmm, ok i didn't think of it like that".

I wanted peoples opinions on what is the better car to drive, running costs, owning etc.

They cost quite a lot and this is what fox is saying. If you're so worried about that £60 a month, you are going to **** bricks when you need to fit £900 worth of tyres, or the dealer tells you your front pads and discs are low and will cost £400 to fit new ones. Then there is the warranty at just a snippet under £500 a year. Then of course, anything else that goes wrong with the car that isn't covered under warranty.

To be honest, I only want opinions from people that have owned either one of these

Well there you have it.

I'm going to guess you can finance the car purchase and it's been calculated as affordable, however the extra cost of fuel and tax would make the total ownership cost per month to a level which can't be sustained.

Just the feeling i'm getting ;)

Otherwise why would anyone pick the diesel over the petrol, it's simply not worth it, plus a diesel will cost more to buy in the firstplace, he could spend less on a petrol and offset the costs to run the thing.

Provided he's not financing it that is.

To me if thats how the numbers were coming out, I wouldn't be buying any of them.

I can sort of see where he is coming from to be honest. I think people forget that with fuel/tax/insurance you're paying money but at end of the car ownership you are not getting anything back. Where as if you sell the car you get something (albeit less because of depreciation) back.

Agree with the BMW motors crew, about potential running/ownership costs even more if doing 15k a year.

May be he is running it through his business or something hence the want for a diesel? :o

I guess we'll never know. Oh well, i'm sure he'll be very happy with his £18,000 318d with no options (but don't worry, it's £100 less to tax a year! yayayaya!!!)
