Then you need to ask who the competition is for. If its for members of this forum/community as a reward for contributing to the boards then yes a contribution is needed and there should be a minimum term/ post count required before you can enter.

If competitions are a reward for the loyalty of paying customers perhaps a newsletter of upcoming comps could be sent to those with recent orders over a certain value and notices put up in the shop?
 
only reason i ever joined was for free post haha we all joined for our own benefits whether that be free post, a competition, advice or a place with like minded people. Very few people wouldve joined randomly without getting something or trying to get something in return a community after all is based on giving and receiving.
