So what is the general consensus on beats audio? From what I have read it sounds like a total gimmick that just emphasizes the low end frequencies at the expense of the mids and highs.

I can't for the life of me think that what is basically an EQ is as good as people are making it out to be. I mean the simple fact that it is done by Dr. Dre suggests that it is not going to be great for decent quality music.

Any thoughts on it?

There are mixed opinions on it, I have no idea what exactly it is, for all we know it could just be a EQ preset, all I know is that it makes my music sound so good

A few Beats Audio phones (notably the 8x) have preamps as part of their audio processing which does improve audio quality and volume. When it's software (as in most of the Android phones, if not all) then it's little more than a dodgy EQ which isn't worth the licensing.

If you're thinking of it with regard to the 8X, then that looks like it could be very good, so wait for reviews of the sound quality

I guess if it's free with the phone and improves the SQ, then it's all good. I certainly however, would never ever even consider buying beats headphones.

Beats headphones sounds like crap, I have no idea how people use them. I thought being so expensive it had to be good but boyyyyy was I wrong. I've tired most of the phones with the Beat EQ its just adds more base, nothing you can already do with the millions of sounds EQ apps on android. The HTC One X+ and 8S/X all have any actual Amp inside but being made by beats makes me think it wont be great, as everything beats is just for fashion and really makes no difference.

it sounds awful to me. i much prefer 'flat' eq and enjoy the music as it's meant to sound, not with 70 tons of flappy, boomy bass and attenuated high frequencies.
