MSI GeForce GTX 690 4096MB+ new monitor.

Im not sure AMD cards can do 3D across 3 screens in crossfire mode. I dont think it works, but am happy to be proven wrong (in fact I hope im wrong). Just something you need to make sure of before going either way. Hopefully Tommybhoy or someone else can clear this up :)

As the monitor i am buying is a nvidia 3d vision built in monitor, the amd side of things doesn't really matter to me...settled on nvidia a while back and prefer the lack of driver problems.

Thanks scotty....howcome though?

I tried various cards set ups(Nvidia) as I wanted 3D surround.(already had my monitors)

What I found was there was no improvement with Sli 4Gb over Sli 2GB cards,

It was only when I got the 3rd 4Gb card that I saw the gains of having the extra 2Gb of vram.

Now, if your happy to have 3D on your middle monitor only
I would agree with Gregster and get the 670's.

I use them all in 2D primarily but can run them all in 3D as well.

You need 3 GPU's to have the GPU horsepower to push more than 2GB of VRAM.

YOU'RE WRONG! :p

OP - 3D is great, but it also gets old fast. I do like it, although I think that there are more important things to spend your money on.

If I was buying, I would go for 7970s over a 680 with Samsung 3D monitors

YOUR BASKET
2 x MSI HD 7970 Lightning 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE FARCRY3, Hitman Absolution, Sleeping Dogs & 20% off MOH Warfighter PC Games £419.99 (£839.98)
3 x Samsung S23A750D 23" 120Hz 3D Widescreen Ultra Thin LED Monitor - Glossy Black £269.99 (£809.97)
Total : £1,679.28 (includes shipping : £24.45).

In the interests of fairness, here are the pros and cons for AMD over NV:
-Better 3 screen support (switching between modes)
-LOADS OF FREE GAMES!
-The Lightnings have better coolers than the 690 (IMO)

-Relies on 3rd party 3D (not necessarily a bad thing)
-more cards=more heat
-Needs displayport for 3 monitors (not a problem with those Samsung monitors)

The way I read it you haven't yet got a 3D vision monitor, if you have, ignore the above :p

weehamish - seriously, if you're going to exclusively post crap like this, then please do STFU
you will still suffer micro stutter and SLI problems.
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Greg..if i went down the road of having a vg278h as as the middle monitor and was going to use it for 3d..do asus do a standard version of the vg278h without the 3d option?

Ermmmm No I don't think so Mariner. I run all 3 monitors in 3D with settings turned down and not by much. I get good fps and I am very happy with it. I love 3D but like Cleee says, for some people it can get old quick.

2*670 will play all games in 3D, just be prepared to tone down settings and to be honest, 3D looks amazing on high instaed of ultra IMO anyways.

Cleeeeecoooooooo gives a good alternative for the dirty AMD route :D

Well it will have to be 3 VG278H monitors :)

Sticking with nvidia mate, might be slightly more expensive but the pro's outweigh the con's for me. Just got to settle on the card/cards

Just had a look at prices and 2* MSI 680s are very good value (on pre-order) for a 680.

YOUR BASKET
2 x MSI GeForce GTX 680 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £359.99 (£719.98)
Total : £731.38 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Could be worth a look. You decide though Mariner on what suits your budget. Glad to hear you are sticking with those monitors...Very good choice :)

What exactly are the pros that you want to pay £200-300 more for exactly? :p

Make no mistake, 7950 crossfire is a faster in triple screen than 670's/680's.

Well i obviously would prefer not to pay more but i have had a lot of experience with amd and nvidia cards over the years and nvidia have came out on top for me, particularly when running 2 cards in sli/crossfire. As 3d is the thing i want to explore with the monitor above..and is an nvidia 3d vision ready display, i want to stick with nvidia as i find them far less hassle all round and i prefer the driver support..many will argue about that but it is my experience none the less.

Just something you may want to bear in mind, nVidia 3 monitors is a PITA as you need to keep resetting the monitors each time you switch between surround and extended, wheres with AMD it's literally just 2 clicks :)

I'd agree that nvidia's driver support is better, bt at the same time, AMD's isn't bad per say. They've certainly caught up a LOT in terms of xfire issues as i've had none at all :)

Just for reference, I've used both AMD and nVidia extensively in the past few months

The 690 is 2 cards still like explained already, it just uses 1 slot, you will still suffer micro stutter and SLI problems.

GTX 690s do not suffer from micro stutter, they have a hardware fix for it.

Other side is 2x 670s as they are just under 680 performance and 2x will beat a 690.

Not on my rig they won't

If your going to spend such money id rather sell your old PC in your sig buy a £1k system with a 680 inside it with an i5k then buy a second 680. Youll maybe spend a tiny bit more

If you are talking about multi GPUs you need an i7 to get the max out of them.
