Hi,

I've been looking to upgrade my gaming rig but I'm a bit unsure of what parts I should get for better performance, I've been looking towards some ram, processor or a graphics card. For the graphics card I thought the 7950 or 660TI would be good but I'm no expert.

Here's what I have at the moment:

Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz Socket LGA1156 8MB L3 Cache

MSI P55-GD65 iP55 Socket 1156 Gigabit Lan 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

EVGA GTX 460 SuperClocked 768MB GDDR5 DVI HDMI HDCP PCI-E Graphics Card

Western Digital WD20EARS 2TB Hard Drive SATAII 64MB Cache

OCZ 750W Fatal1ty Series Semi-Modular PSU

Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1066MHz i5 Memory Kit 1.5V CL7

appreciate any tips you guys have. Thanks!

Hi and welcome.

Is the CPU currently overcloked?

• If not, buy an aftermarket heatsink and push the core speed of the CPU up.

• Buy a new GFX card and see how that improves things along with the faster CPU speed.

• If you are still not satisfied, replace the CPU+board and you can use the new aftermarket heatsink on the new CPU.

What stupid said is 100% perfect. If your CPU isn't OCed get an aftermarket cooler, can get a decent one for around £30. As 1156 and 1155 have the same mounting it will be more than easy to move if you do end up switching.

For the gpu id say get a 7950. The pricepoint there at now make them great value.

Like stupid says if the OCed Cpu and new gpu don't help you, you can go ivy then.

Thanks a lot guys, and I think his name is Stulid not Stupid xD

I'll probably go for the 7950 then as it seems to be the favoured one.

One the processor what's the best way to overclock it and how do I know how much it can take? any recommendations?

Sorry for bothering you so much but the help is very useful

Bother us as much as you want, that's what were here for. If we don't want to help we'll ignore you, easy as. :)

Im posting from my phone so 'auto-spell' doesn't like stulid. Got it right then though. :)

Overclicking is easy, there are many great guides out there, including videos. You can also post in the overclocking and cooling section.

Is there a cooler you have your eye on?

I overclick on a daily basis...my poor mouse xD

I haven't looked at a cooler yet since I was unaware of this option, do you have any recommendations?

Thanks again

I've got an antec900 case I think... can't check at the moment since I'm at work but it's a huge case. I think I'll order a fan/heatsink and the 7950 GFX card today and then lookup if I can learn how to overclock.

edit: What about RAM, is 8gb still enough for running a voicechat, watch livestreams and play games? Would 16gb RAM make a big difference?

Edit2: 750W powersupply shouldn't be any problems either right? The graphics cards seem to take about 150 and I can't think of all the other stuff going to 700

Appreciating the help, need to learn this stuff since I work with IT related stuff as well. I hate knowing only the software side :P

For lower priced coolers, £30 ish. The CM 612s, Matterhorn Pure, Artic i30 are all good choices.

Also the dark night and HR02 macho are on offer sub £30, well worth it at that price.

reading through one of the overclocking guides they recommend putting the DRAM Frequency on 1600 Mhz

the RAM I have is:
2x Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1066MHz

does this mean I'd need to upgrade and remove my old ram? Or am I just being stupid

Valid point but its not needed. CPU's do OC better with faster RAM but it will be fine. It may need a further bit of tweeking though I doubt it, not worth the upgrade, though RAM is mad cheap now.

cool, currently hovering on the order button now for:

MSI HD 7950 Twin Frozr III OC V2 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom CPU Cooler
and just as a bonus since I need a new keyboard:

Qpad MK-85 LED Pro Backlit Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

going to give myself a few minutes to think on it then probably order and have it delivered tomorrow . If I order it I'll tell you guys how it goes :D
