Using the internet for almost everything and my mobile to call people so land line is almost never used. Seems a waste of money paying for the line rental. Is it possible to have only broadband for example?

'The one plan' on 3 mobile is properly unlimited, but for example, galaxy s3, 31 quid a month, unlimited data, teather it to your pc.

Depends on signal in your house though, i only get 3-4 at home but my mate gets about 10meg.

so shouldn't you be paying less if you used it only for broadmand and not for both (internet and phoning)?

Be unlimited (i think)do an internet only plan.. You still have to pay line rental but its a little bit cheaper than everywhere else. Think you have to get thoer broadband though.

I get 8.5 regularly with one plan; had to move to my mums place temporary and she had no line, did not want to get tied to a contract I could not take with me to a new place. So I got a one x and for £38 a month I have my phone and broadband covered. Place is a tad rural and friends line speeds in the village are not as good as I get with tethering.

Virgin Media cable uses a different line for broadband and phone.

Did you not know this?
Virgin Media.

It's not a waste paying for line rental, as you are using the line when using broadband..

Ahleckz, I believe they were 2 separate sentences. He firstly stated 'Virgin Media' as an answer to the OP's question. He then secondly stated it isn't a waste paying for line rental in reference (I assume) to ADSL ISPs.

This is because we pay for line rental and broadband to our ISPs. As ADSL broadband is carried through our phone lines, in effect, the 'line rental' we pay is not just for the 'voice' over our phone. We are paying for the upkeep and maintenance to BT's copper network.

Although in other respects what some people are getting at these days, is that we should have a substantially reduced rate in line rental and not have any call allowance/package due to the landline never being used.

Virgin do but they charge you more to not have the phone line

No I didn't, mines being installed on Thursday. Why can't they use the same line ?

Two completely different technologies.
ADSL is over copper pair phone lines and the ADSL signal is added at the exchange, DOCSIS (cable) is over co-ax and is on a seperate co-ax network which is also used to deliver the TV service.

This is also why you can't Virgin Cable in as many places as they have to have laid the co-ax network.

I'll be interested to see how the 4G roll-out effects this ! I've already seen Tweets from EE about their 4G dongles and mifi/routers due for release. If they manage to reach some of the more rural areas (eventually) we might finally get some decent speeds (given that current rural 'decent' can be much less than 1 Meg !).

So if I got VM foptic when I move to the new place, that's all I need; no phone (so no line rental)?

I have Sky at the moment (which I'd cancel), and that does require a phone line to work, so is VM the same if you have the TiVo box? - I don't know that I'm interested in it to be honest.

I have noticed that they have some very confusing pricing that makes it look like it's cheaper to have interweb + a phone... but when you look it says +£14.95 line rental.

Correct - you do not need to have a phone line from VM to have their cable internet service.

If you mean does the TiVo require a phone line, I think the answer is no.

Welcome to Virgin Media! I've not been with them for a while but it used to work out cheaper to get the phone line as the difference in price for no having the phone line was more than the line rental. I just had a quick look and this is no longer the case.

I can have Infinity without paying for Line rental?
I don't know where you are in Crewe, but not where I am you can't... we're still on rather dodgy copper (and the connection dies when the wind or rain is too heavy as the line quality goes with it).

The junction box ~50m from our house has lost of properganda about Infinity on it, but that's as close as they've got.

Obviously if they have got fibre optic to your place it's a different matter.
