7850 sub £100 by Xmas ?

That was a 1GB 7850 that was £120. I doubt very much you will see the 2GB at -£100

Exactly. And I wouldn't buy a 1gb card going forwards. 3gb might be overkill for many users, but 2gb is the accepted minimum these days (for 1080p, high in-game settings).

minimum? at 1080p i can think only less than a handful of games that use 1.5gb of memory

Not by Xmas. when the 8### series starts hitting the shops yes, but not before then i would have thought.

I would be surprised even with the 8 series release. The older cards tend not to change too much in price.

There are probably a fair few more that use more than 1GB so 2GB as a minimum would seem to be the best option as that's the next step up.

minimum suggests thats the lowest you can get away with, where as really its the optimal amount which is what i meant.

obviously 1gb doesnt cut it anymore but i dont see games using close to 2gb for along time yet (unless your using higher than 1920x1080/triple screen)

If you wouldn't recommend buying a new card with less than 2gb (it sounds like you wouldn't), then effectively 2gb is the minimum for new cards.

Yes I'm still playing games on a 1gb card myself, but there's no way I'd upgrade to a card with less than 2gb going forwards.

What FoxEye said.

If 1GB doesn't cut it any more then there doesn't seem any point in buying a new card with that amount.

2GB has to be the new recommended minimum when buying a current generation card.

but saying 2gb minimum makes people who dont know better assume they would be better off with a 3gb+ card when they wouldnt because right now unless your running triple monitors you wont be anywhere near 2gb.

Even for 720P monitors, I would find it very difficult to recommend a 1GB card unless the OP had a very strict budget.

I agree with Surveyor in the fact that 2GB is the minimum going forward.

On a 1680x1050 screen the last 2 games I've played, BF3 (high) and Witcher 2 (most on/max cept ubersmapling) easily hit the 950mb + range. Performance wasn't adversely affected from the feel of playing but anything more powerful I would want and reccomend at least 2GB going forward. The 7850 is the highest card that I think 1GB would be acceptable but barely.
