My copy arrived last night and I've put a good few hours into it now.
The start of the game is a little slow, it's not that its bad, its just its setting up the story. Most of the early events are all 'on rails' so to speak, as there is no exploring, you are more or less put where you need to be for each mission. I have however just reached the stage where the entire game world opens up and it feels like its Assassins Creed, but slightly crossed with something between Red Dead Redemption and Skyrim.
I've certainly seen a few bugs myself, which I think is odd as I don't really recall seeing them so much in other games of the series. Perhaps this one had less testing time or maybe its just the scope of the game world. Few that I've encountered already:
- Fell down a massive cliff into a hole, it was clear I was supposed to die, but I didn't. I was walking around and the world was clipping through, then I touched a different piece of the ground and died instantly.
- Saw a deer that was stuck with its head in a tree.
- Seen a few items that are floating or have odd mavity, such as a rifle that is falling really slowly.
- There is a missions with a chase sequence early in the game which involves quite a few soldiers and explosions. I saw some serious slow down on the Xbox version.
One other little niggle I've got is due to Ubisoft messing up and leaving something in the game which causes a spoiler. I won't ruin it, but here is my tip to prevent yourself ending up spoiling it...
Early on in the game, there is a plot twist which unfortunately gets ruined if you are reading the various Animus bios that pop up when you meet new people and buildings etc. I think they have actually gone out of the way to make sure they don't spoil the story, by updating the bios as the story progresses. However, for one of the characters it seems like they forgot! So my advice would be to read them after the plot twist.
So far though I'm enjoying it, the world is certainly well realised, technically its probably likely to be the best game, however I think its going to be so difficult to top Ezio's story, which was my fear and what a lot of the reviews seem to say too.
I don't understand this anymore. Why don't they let you assassinate from cover or grab someone from over a ledge, etc? Stuck doing some stupid mission trying to free captives and there seems to be none of the assassination stuff from previous games.
Well I am getting a bit long in the tooth but they've removed the X and Y buttons from the HUD so you can no longer see whether you're in range or not for the different types of assassination.
I lost my rag with it now. I can kill someone from behind a corner but I can't work out how you kill someone from within a haystack. It's only on rental so it's going back. And I never did get to even see Connor or whatever he's called. I'll pick it up again on PC sometime.
You can still assassinate somebody like in the past, however they removed the visual indicator of what button to press when the target comes into range. You still get some indication as when the target is close, they become slightly more highlighted to show that they are targeted. If you've played the other Assassins Creed games it should be obvious when to strike without the need for a visual indicator anyway.
I think the reason for the change is because they've made combat a bit more free flowing so that you can do more while moving. There was a dialogue that pops up about it during one of the early missions, plus if you exit the Animus, there is an e-mail on the computer terminal about the 'upgrades to the Animus'.... in other words, the changes they've made to gameplay.
I think another thing is, early in the game you likely don't have access to all the moves and ways you can kill somebody. It's been like that with the series for a while.
