Hey guys need a bit of advice,

I need to get a gaming rig up and running for my brother who mainly plays WoW. I have an old IP35 MB with a q6600 in it which also has 4 gig of ram (I can’t remember speeds etc). I am thinking of buying him the remainder of the bits to get him up and running (HDD, PSU etc). The problem I have is graphics card. I have an old 8800GT which I just don’t feel will be up to scratch running WoW now days with the new expansion etc. I have a 6950 in my current machine which I could replace with a 7950 and give my 6950 to my brother.

What are we thinking the best course of action is here? I suspect that the 6950 will be a massive overkill for that mother board and will likely to be bottlenecked by the board and CPU. Not to mention I don’t feel comfortable upgrading right now as I feel my 6950 is doing just fine.

If I was to keep my 6950 and buy him a new card what do you think would be a sensible choice considering the options? Or should I just bite the bullet and go with the 7950 :)

Not sure what do…

Second hand 5850 at around £50 (I recently bought a mint, boxed, Twin Frozr II for £45 from the Members Market).

6950 is a good card with the q6600, particularly if you overclock the hell out of it!

Plus you get a shiney new 7950!

To many people put to much emphasis on bottlenecking components, the Q6600 is still a fine quad core CPU, It's comparable with my PhenomII 940 and I have that running with a 7950. With an over specked GPU you can always place more emphasis on quality with little/no loss to CPU capped FPS.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead. I am going to go with the 7950 and looking at this week’s deals there are 2 Asus cards, the only differences I can see is one has a clock speed of 800 the other 900. Am i likely to see any real benefit in the fast clocker speed? or can I get similar speeds just by OCing the cheaper card

Thanks

Edit: Hmm just noticed the 900 takes up 3 slots... Am i likely to have any complications using this with my Asus maximums V Gene?
