How much rent is reasonable?

To keep it nice and short, I may be getting an apprenticeship with a monthly wage of £400. 40 hour weeks Mon-Fri on £2.65/hour. The wage should be at least £106/week but I'd sort that out if I got the job.

I am living at home with my parents and I asked my mum how much rent would she want if I was on £400/month and she said £200. Keep in mind I am at the age where I want to start e.g. driving lessons (to increase my job prospects), buy new clothes and money for entertainment purposes.

How reasonable do you think this is in comparison to the wage I would receive?

I would be fine with paying the rent asked (although I would be a bit disgruntled at first) however in the long run I think a year of hardship would be beneficial from the qualifications I would receive at the end (and maybe a job).

I believe affordable rent is classified as 35% of gross income. Obviously that is a broad measure of affordable hpusing rather than individual situations.

Is £200 a month for a room reasonable in your area? Also it isn't like your mum will rent the room out anyway. Unless she can't afford the rent I think paying half the bills is fair.

Point her to this article and offer £134.

You're in a rock and a hard place, you wouldn't be able to get cheaper rent than what she's offering but she is charging an awful lot. Do you help out around the house and stuff like that? That might help you convince her to lower it to something that you (and I) think is a bit more reasonable.

Well let's get the obvious out of the way - that's blatantly an illegal wage so why are you posting like you are going to tolerate something so ridiculous?

Edit - oh an apprentaship. Pffft it's such a miserably low wage, slave labour :(

I would be employed as an apprenticeship. The minimum wage for apprenticeships is basically half of what it is for a regular job.

The minimum wage for my age is £4.98, however as an apprentice it would be £2.65.

No it's not. The national minimum wage for an apprentice is £2.65 (if he's under 19 and in his first year).

DUE DILIGENCE, DO IT; COUNSEL!

If you're getting rent, food, electricity, gas, water, internet, tv etc all for £200 a month, I don't see an issue.

Although £200 a month isn't a huge amount to do what you want with, it's reasonable (you just can't go out on the town every other night)

Woah, £2.65ph, just made me go check my apprentice wages from a few years back, £4.1602ph, I had it lucky, they're really paying the rock bottom of the rate possible, nice. I was paying £100 a month board, the first few years of my apprenticeship.

Wow, you guys were fast on that one

Answering the question, on your wage, I'd say £50 was in the regions of fair.

It's still such a small amount! I hope the opportunity is worth it.

she is asking for a lot :) just say you'll pay some bills and something and get the price down.. i wouldn't be paying more than 100tbh.. 200 would not be enough for travel and food for me, so i can't see how that is reasonable.

and a golden rule - the more you earn the more you spend.

It varies heavily on the situation your family is in. If there are difficulties and that amount of money is crucial to keep everything running, then yeah, I suppose it is reasonable.

If however the money is being charged just because she can, or would like a bit of extra monies, then I don't believe it as. As ultimately, you're only 18, you're essentially in education trying to better yourself earning extremely little so if I were a parent I'd be trying to make your life as easy as possible and wouldn't charge anything.

So it could be reasonable or unreasonable, simply depends on the situation which we do not know anything about.
