Nexus 7 to control my PC

Hi Guys, I really don't know where to post this as it covers a couple of areas, so here goes:

I want to use my pc as a HTPC (mainly for music) and I'd like to use a tablet as the remote (so I get the album art in my hand etc).

The way my pc is setup is to output the audio as a digital signal via usb to my audiolab M-dac; so the music is 'made' outside of the pc if you like.

So my question is this:

If I use a tablet for the task of remote, the sound should still work as it does now, right? As all I'm changing is the the I control the desktop...

Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks for the greta forum, been a lurker for some time.

***EDIT*** does everyone start this forum as a thug? Lol...

Thanks for the speedy reply and putting my mind at rest, CnP.

I was originally looking for a nas solution, but realised most (read: all) media streamers don't output audio via usb, which means essentially you have to use their dca instead of the one I already have; there's a bewlidering array of 'solutions' available...

Interesting, thanks I'll have a look at that app.

I was originally going to have a go with Splashtop HD2, have you any experience with it?

My reasons for this preference is that you can see the album art etc, so should make navigation of media enjoyable (and hopefully easy).

Have not tried that one myself, but it looks more like a VNC Connection, meaning you will have to do it via mouse and keyboard, still looks good. The one I linked you gives you buttons like a remote, meaning its easier and quicker to do things, like go to next show/song, volume adjust etc.. without having to find it in task bar, or move to where the next button is.

Try both :)

Gmote is another app that allows you to use a smartphone etc as a basic keyboard and mouse.

I would look at using XBMC for your HTPC playback needs on the PC, it has an official remote app on the iOS and android marketplaces too ;)

Sorry, I neglected to mention I use J river as my media player; if that has any impact on the advice people want to give.

Couldn't I setup my desktop so it fits the screen of my remote better? (ie, lower res with large icons etc).

You could, but that would limit your playback resolution too remember. You cant watch a 1080p movie on a screen set to 480*320. You would just have to move the screen around to find what you want on the remote as when zoomed in you will have to scross the desktop.

Of course, as music is my main passion, the sound is the main thing for me.

I'll find a way of linking my pc to a TV (which I don't own yet) for films etc; I don't get films on tablets/phones, maybe I'm getting old lol :D

I don't think it does, but then I'm a noob in this area.

My PC is an old school high end rig:

top spec core duo 2

Nvidia GTX 295 dual core

EVGA nForce 790i Ultra SLI Motherboard

But I'm down sizing and giving the above to my Dad, I don't really play games anymore so it's sitting making noise and not making things look good in 3d.

I want something silent that can tun a desktop smoothly, that'll do me nice :)
