PX5's - bought, but silly decision?

So, bought a set of PX5's, but wondering if it was the best option for me now.

I currently only have it connected by stereo rca from an hdmi matrix switch. But now wondering if it wasn't kinda pointless getting these if not using the optical and a 5.1 source.

Getting everything set up to use 5.1 sources is going to cost a pretty penny as I will need an optical switch (for switching between 360, ps3 and pc which I can't find decent for less than £50), plus a usb "card" capable of outputting dolby digital live (another £50). Plus not to mention will be a fair few more cables (another £10).

The PX5's sound pretty decent when you tweak them using the supplied software, but wondering if wouldn't have been better off with a cheaper set of regular wireless heads and using an rca switch for swapping inputs...

Or maybe a Turtle Beach Ear Force DSS and connect my hd555's up to that and swap as needed?

Ok, been using these on and off, but beginning to think that they are not quite right for me.

Since first post, I got a new amp + speakers to replace my onkyo to make connecting everything simpler, and reduce cabling.

The main problem I have is that there are 3 levels of volume control:
1) The main amp's headphone output which runs into the line-in on the base station
2) The line-in on the base station
3) The volume control on the headphones

What happens in the end is that I end up with a lot of background hiss on the phones unless I do lots of tweaking with the presets to alter certain frequencies and also end up adjusting volumes across all devices until I end up with volume generally low.

Now I like them for the fact that I cna use them easily between PS3, 360 and PC. And they can sound good, but I am wondering if there is not something that will allow easy connectivity for chat on all 3 platforms that will just work better in my setup.

Not worried about surround headphones as the headphone out on my amp has virtual surround which actually works pretty well.

So stereo headset, easy chat connectivity for all platforms, and preferably wireless.

Unless there is some kind of mic I can use easily between all and just be able to use any headphones whatsoever...

Your setup sounds complicated :-) I am not a fan of wireless headsets, to be honest I am not a fan of headsets at all. I would much prefer wired stereo headphones. Yeah call me old fashioned :-)

But anyway getting back to the problem, what make is your amp?

Is there any particular reason you want wireless? I have seen a lot of people complain about hiss on wireless headsets.

It's not quite as complicated as it sounds. Everything goes into the amp, and the headphones socket is connected to the base station for PX5's

The amp is a Pioneer VSX S300. Not a high-end thing, but wanted as small as I could get.

The onkyo Htx 22hdx would have been perfect, but for the lack of headphone socket!

I have a pair of sennheiser hd555, which I would happily use, but the question then is, but would I do about games communications with a pair of regular old stereo phones on?

Why would I prefer wireless? Because I already have far too many cables running around my desk, even after de-cluttering :(

Well, just as a test, can you try the Senn's plugged directly into the headphone socket of your amp and see do you get any hiss?

Oh, tested that plenty and I don't get any of the hiss that way.

looks like the PX5's are the problem so.

I think the other guy meant clip on mic :D It might be an option, a cheap USB clip on mic. I think they sell for £3 or something like that.

Not sure, but would you be able to use one with your xbox?

I have seen a couple of xbox mic bluetooth adapters. Although one comes with headset and one is a turtlebeach product, so not sure of the viability of connecting them with other devices...

In the end I decided to send em back.

They were clear, but bass was lacking any oomph whatsoever, the high's were shrill and grating, they were too loose on my head, pretty useless wireless range, and didn't reduce cabling much at all...

The clarity kind of put me off my HD555's though. Despite the PX5's shortcomings I did like the clarity, and the HD555's just sounded muddy when listening to.

So I have some wired Sony MA900's on the way. Expensive, but they sound like the will be just what I am after. I have ways around there being no mic :)

good choice, if you kept them they would have driven you insane!! A little niggling issue over time can become the most annoying thing in the world lol

Have heard the Sony's are probably one of the best wireless heapdhones you can get. Let us know what they sound like when you get them :-) Ha they will probably take a month to burn in!!

Oh no, I didn't get Sony wireless. Well, I did some time last week, but they picked up someone else's tv sound, so they got packed up in no time at all and sent back.

The Sony's I am waiting for (Looks like DPD might let me down for the first time ever today) are the MA900's and are wired.

Given up the whole wireless thing. One day, maybe they can get them right, but I just don't think they are there yet.

Hey that's even better that you didn't go wireless. I just presumed that you went for the Sony wireless ones, as you can tell I am not well up on their model numbers.

How much were they?

And I agree with you about wireless, just not there yet.

They were £200.

Still can't believe I plumped that much for headphones... Difficult decision, especially as once you hit that price level, there are soooooo many choices, and all phones seem like marmite (either love or hate) and it's all very subjective.

The MA900's, from reviews, seem like they could offer the kind of sound I am after.

Though it looks like pretty much a definite now that DPD will be letting me down for the first time ever....

yeah it's so subjective and so many choices!!! I would have went for the Sennheiser 598's if I wanted to be safe. Or you might have pushed me towards the Beyer Dt990 or the AKG K701's, I would never have even thought of Sony :-)

If I was spending big money on a headphone right now I would get the hifiman he-400's. Either those or the HE-500's. Those are the two headphones that I want more that any other. And I am not buying any until I can afford one of those.

Well, the set that I should have received last Friday never arrived, so ordered another which arrived today.

Think I love em. They knock the socks off the PX5's for gaming and most certainly for music.

Not had a huge amount of time to listen to em, but think they are just up my street. The bass is good, but not overdone, and even on mp3's I can her fr more than I have been able to on even the hd555's.

They are just lovely and clear. And so light, it's like I am not even wearing headphones. Feels like all the around is coming from all around, and not the center of my head.

I am no audiophile, but I know what I like and I like these :)

Congratulations!! There is always that moment of dread when you test new cans and you are going, oh please sound good I spent £200 on you!!

Hope they last you a long time :-)
