This takes the hiss.

In the era of cuts & deprivation;

This non nonessential maintenance, shows how out of touch the current administration is. I fully agree with preserving things if there in a state of decay or in need of the work, but this seem more like "ohh look thats looking a bit tatty lets throw 10k at it"...

The government is forcing cuts in the nhs, we don't deserve preventive maintenance, but they must keep their libraries looking tip top!

Something as trivial as this should have waited until there were funds to spare!

How is it throwing away money? It will work its way back to the Government one way or the other.

Gov gives company 10k, money is then spent on materials (taxed), employees wages (taxed) and then hopefully makes a bit of profit at the end (taxed).

Plus then whatever the company spends that profit on in the future is taxed and anything the employee spends their wages on is taxed.

Eventually most of it works its way back to the government, while in the meantime keeps people employed.

Its only really when the money leaves the country that the government loses out.

Multiple times in the past the NHS has refused to fund cancer drugs on basis of cost, and now we are spending 5 figures on some historically insignificant rubbish. We don't have to preserve every old gift in all it's triteness.

William Hague is one of the better MPs across all the parties.

You probably still just rate him against that lisping, fawning speech to Thatcher at the 1977 Tory party conference when he was about...... 16?! Yes it was cringeworthy and horrible, but it's nearly 40 years ago.

He makes a much better MP than he ever did party leader.

Total non-story by the way. No doubt Millipede will be lisping and spraying his way through some form of slanging match in parliament in the days to come.
 
Shame we can't see alternate universes where this story was Labour instead of Conservative to see the different reaction from the same people. :p

I didn't refute your point about people being denied treatment by the NHS, but you know full well that the two occurrences are not linked. £10,000 of spending in the FCO does not equate to £10,000 being taken from the NHS budget. The two are allocated budgets and spend accordingly and how they spend it does not affect the ability to spend of the other.

You reckon? I personally find it ridiculous that this much money was spent servicing albert regardless of which bunch of lunatics is behind it.

I'm still glad we don't have a labour government at the moment, and I'm not looking forward to the labour government getting back into power at the next election :(
 
Every time I read the OP's quote, I can see those " specialists" sitting around laughing as they seriously suggest they would need to x-ray / CT scan the snake.. and employ another man of equal "skill" to analyse the pictures.

What a waste of money :p

The money squandered could obviously have been allocated to the NHS.

Are you really this obtuse? That £10k could have funded medical treatment that would otherwise not have been available, or reduced patient waiting times by being able to refer more patients to private doctors.
