Jobs and relocating.

So technically I'm relocating, since I'm looking for work in Manchester and I don't live there at present.

What I'm wondering, if I'm applying for jobs in Manchester, what's the deal gonna be with getting accommodation, I mean, obviously I can't be moving into accommodation without having a job, so I'd have to wait until I have a job offer before I can find some accommodation.

Is this something that should be mentioned on the cover letters, or do I even need to mention it?

Or is it a case of, if you want the job then take it and for the time being I spend time commuting from York - Manchester and back on the trains every day?

Thanks.

1. Find job. They usually allow you a bit of time before starting for notice on your old job.
2. Secure accommodation (renting?) in that time.

Wouldn't bother on any covering letter but have a chat about it at interview (it'll come up anyway). I'm assuming these roles don't have any relocation package available? Either way if they want you for the job they'll be pretty accomodating whilst you find somewhere to stay. Worst case you stay in a b&b as a temporary measure or commute for a time

I wouldn't mention it on the covering letter unless perhaps you were emigrating to a different country and asking them to sponsor you. If you're within the same country and/or your skills are not hugely in demand then it could be viewed as effectively stating to them that it's likely to be a problem for you and might be reason enough not to take the application forwards. Maybe it wouldn't matter but it's a risk that you don't really need to take and as said it'll probably come up in the interview so no need to draw extra attention to it.

Depends on the employer. Some will give you time to move and some will give you relocation fees, others won't. I'd say anyone worth working for will be receptive to discussing it with you.

Thanks all, certainly inspires a bit more confidence when looking for a job. Hoping I'll have a job sometime this year or at worst beginning of next year, I've not got that much experience and I did Business IT at uni so very general so makes it pretty hard to get a job and it's rather depressing.

Unless the job says "immediate start required" the company will expect a delay before you can start. Most people will need a month to get out of an existing job for example. What they want to know is that you have thought through the consequences of moving: if you have a Significant Other, are they OK with this? Children? Can you you afford to live in the area? (I had this from a company in Aberdeen). They will usually want an estimate of how long you think it will take to move, and up to four weeks should be OK. I tend to research local rental and buy prices so that I can say honestly that I will be renting until probation is over, then buying, and that I can afford the local prices.

I have an interview in 2 weeks and I moved to Kent for this job, you just tell them you will rent if u get the job, then give a months notice.

You can rent somewhere in a couple of weeks.

Just mention relocation in the interview. my company offered £1k relocation expenses, but I told them to add it to my salary instead :D

When I moved from Bath to Birmingham for a job, I ended up driving up on Monday morning, staying in a Travelodge (£20/night) in the week and driving back to Bath on the Friday night.

It's tiring, but doable short term (I did it for about 3 weeks before I found somewhere to rent)

Well in Manchester It seems there is a lot of 1 bed flats that are affordable for someone who is on a job of 15k pa +, so if I happen to secure a job then I'll just rent a 1 bed flat, unless I know any friends that decide they want to move into a shared house.

When I was relocating, I ended up noting it in the cover letter, as I was getting rejections and queries stating I lived too far away (160 miles). I'd have thought it be pretty obvious but never mind! So yeah, I'd just mention it.

Relocation should be something that is brought up either by the employer or you in the interview. I know when I had the interview for my current job relocation was discussed.

I wouldn't mention it in your cover letter, it should be fairly obvious from the address on your CV that you don't live in Manchester.
