Would you let your wife work in a prison?

My wife has an interview next week for a job with adult literacy etc at a prison. I'm obviously a little nervous about this.

She recently left a full time job she didn't really like for a job share she is much happier in. We can just afford the income reduction, although things will be tight. She has been looking around for something to fill the other 2.5 days a week, and has now got this interview.

It is a maximum security prison and she will have direct contact with the prisoners. Her aunt is a prison nurse at another prison and tells me there is nothing to worry about as she would never be left alone with them, but I still think I need to draw the line somewhere.

I'd let her

Everything in my head says, yes you should.

But I get the niggle that clearly you've found. There's definitely a safety concern there.

Also,

GD response, of 'we have to have pictures to decide if something will be an issue for her :p'

My mother was a prison officer, she has had **** thrown over her a couple of times AKA "cupping", however I don't think this will apply to your missus as she will not be going near the cells (unless she's giving private lessons, amiright men?) also she will be taken care of by the officers.

In your situation, I might. I wouldn't let my own wife work in a prison, as in Norn Iron they've taking to shooting prison staff again this past week.
It was a prison officer, a different matter, but I wouldn't be surprised if support staff start getting targetted also. Muppets who spray a car with bullets at rush hour on a motorway don't care about who gets injured. Sure as hell won't 'free Ireland' either.

Tbh it's bad enough being male and doing it let alone being female. I had a friend who taught basic adult education in one and she didn't like it one bit because of their attitude, abuse and swearing etc. This wasn't a maximum security prison though, and I suppose that would make it worse. Good luck to you both. :)

Edit: I can understand the need to help people but most of the time people have to want to be helped first.

It's not going to be a massrape orgy or a free-for-all. If she wants to do it, and you don't want her to do it, then you can demand that she doesn't do it. She has no obligation to follow your demands, even if you can drum up some real reasons to support them, and that is her right.

If she was, for example, a cleaner in the shopping centre - then she'd be at risk every day from possible druggies, alcoholics, or simply being a lone female in a male's toilet. Would you demand her not to do it? You can't cottonwool her. You can put forth suggestions, and advice, but anything else is wrong.

Let her go for the interview, doesn't mean she will get the Job, they will assess based on many different aspects not just her ability to teach.

Being an maximum security prison will need someone with a very thick skin to be able to put up with the level of verbal abuse she would get. If she's the sort of women to burst out in tears when someone says her bum is fat, you have nothing to worry about. Other than the fat bum!

I wouldn't be able to stop her if that's what she wanted to do so i wouldn't cause a fuss. I would be a bit uncomfortable with it but no more so than if she wanted join the police, be a paramedic etc.

Back in 2007 I worked in the education block of a Juvenile Prison and every day they had women teachers crying.
The one positive is that it is unlikely that a male prisoner would attack a female teacher.

Who watches the officers?

Sorry, I'm not helping.

I thought about making his comment :) touché

Yeah, somehow I imagine the level of abuse would be massive.

Last person I knew that worked in a prison had an affair with one of the prisoners.

Hehe, not helping, even if not true :p

"Let your wife"....... What is this, the middle ages?

if i told my wife not to do something i would expect her not to do it.

i don't tell her what to do but if i did she would because i would be telling her for a good reason and she wouldn't do it and same goes for me. its what man and wife do...

Would I want her to? Not reallly, I would be worried though.

Would I let her? She is her own person, she can do what she wishes.

Was it the one in Werrington by any chance as I think that is the place I was referring to the OP?
