5 more years! Of pain.

It was always going to be at least a decade to get over a crash of this severity.

As for Greece, there was an article a few days ago saying their economic outlook was worse than previously thought...and that's saying something!

Nothing new there! Anyone who expected it to be over soon has been living in cloud cuckoo land. No pain, no gain…….

Isn't it going to be 5 years till we balance our own books... For countries like Greece and Spain, got to be double?

With all the pressures of Globalisation, world populations, end of the cheap food and energy era, I do wonder if we will ever get back to how we have been living for the last 40yrs of consumerism and waste...not that we should imo.

We are now reliant on science to find the solutions to these pressing world problems, especially finding ways of producing abundant and cheap energy.

The whole mess will not resolve itself in our lifetimes imo. To much against us for the foreseeable future...

Debt
Population
Food
Energy
Climate
Water
Pollution

I think the responses here are too pessimistic. Sure parts of the world are going to be feeling the pain for a lot longer but mainly southern Europe. For the USA, UK and Northern Europe I think the worst is over now, though we won't be returning to what we know as "the good times" for quite some time.

We already knew it yes, and the political rhetoric in this country has echoed that. The interesting part of this story is that its Merkel who has said it, as far as I'm aware this is the first time she has acknowledged the true extent of the problem

Sadly unless technology can fix these problems, a big war will probably have to occur to bring the population down a bit.

No, they all hoped in 5 years to cut the deficit in half, not repay a penny, and not balance it.
Neither crowd had a plan for further than 5 years, and by halfing the deficit it seemed to suggest that all would magically be better.

Its all still to be repayed with interest.

Thats the problem with politics, they have no incentive to think about the future after they cannot be elected anymore.

oh right so capitalism doesnt work, well **** me theres a surprise.

this is what happens when you let greed rule

We dont have a capitalist economy, we have an economy were if a large company gets ito trouble it gets bailed out if its a small it does not.
Some of us knows what needs to be done, but we are call racists by the liberal facists for their own means.

And in turn is part of the problem with every major procurement we make as a country - short term thinking without proper consideration for the long terms cost or consequence. Means we are forever picking up the mistakes of five / ten years ago.
