Windows 8 The Verdicts ?

upgraded today on my main pc, have been using windows 8 rp on my second pc for some time now so was able to test my apps would work ok, but its nice to get a play with the multimonitor support etc. Am really happy I much prefer this to 7, don't miss the start menu one bit I don't think I actually really ever used it, the new start screen is easier to keep tidy and I will actually use it.

Agree i like the start page with all the programs , don,t need desktop shortcuts anymore :) just feel like its had a boost too much faster overall :)

Have you considered the problem might actually be ATI, Cyberlink and Creative?

Well everything worked on Windows 7. I'm having loads of problems with the 12:10 and the 12:11 beta drivers.

BTW. I couldn't re-install Windows 7 because i only have the upgrade version. My CD Product key was invalid. So reluctantly i've reinstalled Windows 8.

When Windows 7 launched I didn't have a single negative word to say about it. It improved in every single way over Vista. Whilst there are a few things that I find positive about Win 8, I simply hate the Metro interface and find the added "security enhancements" a real pain to live with. Why do I have to enter a password or pin every time I login, and why is it so damn hard to remove when having multiple user accounts setup?

I'm using whatever ATI drivers Windows installed as standard, not tried 12:10 yet, but these seem fine, not sure if that helps?

Open command prompt (shortcut “Windows key+R”) and type “netplwiz” without quotes. Untick the box where it says passwords.

I don't have to enter a password just disable online accounts and use a local one.

And yes windows 7 improved on vista Windows XP improved on vista for crying out loud lol

Metro is growing on me the more I use it the more I adapt it Sure it's not been long enough for me to say if I like or Hate it but I have to support it all the same so I will endeavour for now. Just want all the drivers to come out So I can have my USB 3 back

that is one way :)

you could also go to user control panel and create a local user account instead of using your msn one sure it means your profile won't replicate around your devices but who wants that anyway :)

I think it's in "manage my Account in PC settings"

I've been using it for a few days now and I do like most elements of it.

I have it installed on my Asus N55SL I bought recently, I paid a bit extra for the Win 8 upgrade. But as I had added a new SSD drive to replace the original HDD I had to call MS customer support to get it activated properly. No big deal, was my fault and they sorted it after 15 mins or so.

I'm very impressed with the boot speed and how much better some of my games and apps run even compared to my Win7 rig with a SSD raid. All my bits of hardware and software have installed and work flawlessly

I have installed Start8 to get the old start menu back as I'm so much in the habit of having one for the last 15 years. I did keep the setting for having it to boot into metro first. I have removed 90% of the apps there but it is handy to check the news and weather quickly before I get to work on the desktop. Metro UI does look cool I guess but I cant see myself using it the way MS want me to.

This is all well and good as I'm quite tech savvy but I can see Win8 being a problem for the mainstream consumers. After a while every new PC/laptop sold will have Win8 pre-installed. So you can imagine most normal people who own a pc/laptop who are not tech savvy getting this new OS home and really struggling to get to grips with all the changes. Nearly all the time new computers don't come with any instructions on how to use it other than a folded diagram of where to plug everything in.

I personally have had to spend an hour or two with a few of my customers one to one explaining how to use it. In the end all but one have requested that I set it up as close to windows 7 or what os they were using previously. These are not stupid people just normal individuals who have a computer because life these day dictates that they should need one. Its a universal issue that even some of the bigger retail chains have had to adapt to. Just today I saw a TV ad from one of the UK's biggest using a 30 minute tutorial with every new laptop as a selling point. As far as I know it's not a strategy they've had to adopt before.

If this UI is here to stay and the start menu is gone for good then in the long term people will get used to it, but for now it's going to cause a headache for a lot of people.

I love Windows 8, I'm not missing the Start menu at all. Start screen looks fantastic.

I'm not really using the Metro apps much yet though, I imagine I would if I had a Surface though. I'm sure this will change as more apps come on line. I really hope Windows 8 does well, it's the best of both worlds.

For anyone who does not know this, move your mouse to the bottom left corner and right click to pull up a menu, all you need is on there.

I was having too many problems with W8...mainly with streaming with Serviio (just wouldnt work properly)...Airserver (jerky and crashing) and the loss of the start menu just made everything so much slower to do.

Currently reinstalling W7 and a nice stable and working OS...it's a shame because I liked the Metro UI as a second monitor dooda, but as the main interface it sucks.

I might go back to it once it had settled in and gets a service pack or two..and all the Serviio etc issues are ironed out, until then it is just too much hassle.

Just streamed a 1080p film with Serviio today and last night as well, worked flawlessly for me. What problems are you having?

Poor support for codecs, dropping in and out of service, patchy playback...just reinstalled W7..and Serviio works fine again. I'll stick with W7 for now, W8 doesn't offer anything over W7 except a few tweaks and the metro shenanigans and I can live without them.

Drivers 3rd Party

So im thinking about upgrading to Win8 (getting the fresh install CD from ocuk)

can anyone let me know the following?

3rd Party Drivers from:
Nvidia/ATI
ASUS (Soundcards)
Razer

are they decent enough to use properly yet? for a gamer
:D

Yeah should all be fine, well not sure on the Razor front but Asus soundcard and ATI gpu working perfectly here.

Does anyone know how to add a gmail account to W8 mail when 2-step authentication is turned on? In mail I just keep on getting the email address or password did not work and no 2 step prompt.

Doh! found it, application specific passwords

Nvidia drivers are fine, use the latest WHQL drivers, most Asus sound cards have drivers now too.

Forgot all about this, I got the £15 offer ages ago, downloading as we speak on the main PC. I choose the option to keep nothing as all my files etc are on a external drive and I would rather setup all new settings for the os anyway. So when installing will it get rid of all the old win 7 stuff or would it be a better option to format, install win 7 and then do the upgrade?

Cheers guys/gals
