5 more years! Of pain.

And in turn is part of the problem with every major procurement we make as a country - short term thinking without proper consideration for the long terms cost or consequence. Means we are forever picking up the mistakes of five / ten years ago.

So maybe we should vote party's in for longer?

I wouldn't say so but there needs to be a radical overhaul of the way decisions are made by those in power and what they truly consider at the time those decisions are made.

As a country we commit to some long term spend/save initiatives but the system only really takes a view on the first few years impact, that's inherently wrong.

I do really believe that things are going to change over the next decade. We have raped the planet for too long now and payback will be long and hard. It will be gradual but through energy saving technologies and localisation we can get through this.

I think 5 years is too conservative, it's probably closer to 10.

A lot of people don't feel in tune with current politics and politicians, it's going to be a lengthy process but the current system isn't going to last imo. However, it's going to take a new generation to gradually change things so we're stuck with what we have for a fair few years yet.

I agree, I'd say it'll be 15-20 years before we feel the effects of the changes.

It's not all doom and gloom, living in the UK, we're still far more privileged than a lot of the world and it certainly doesn't mean that all is lost.

I think it is rather good for us really, the pressure will force us to advance, It will be shame though for the lesser nations, but we don't live in a UN acclimatised world yet, so it is of no surprise if they become stricken with food shortages and the like.

We aren't too far off fusion power right now, so I don't see our little planet turning into Venus' child.

I think you are correct, humanity seems to perform best when the **** hits the fan.

Well, that's a damn shame, as we are living in the least violent and most peaceful time in the history of our species (and by a huge margin).

We have other pressures though, energy, economic climate. Doesn't necessarily have to be related to war.

**** has hit the fan in terms of the economy. Energy hasn't quite hit the fan but it would be heading that way if we didn't stop to think.

Less violence is good, perhaps it is a sign of our continuing evolution.

With all the pressures of Globalisation, world populations, end of the cheap food and energy era, I do wonder if we will ever get back to how we have been living for the last 40yrs of consumerism and waste...not that we should imo.

We are now reliant on science to find the solutions to these pressing world problems, especially finding ways of producing abundant and cheap energy.

Just wait till the people in there 40s now hit the pension age in this country, oh yer immigration will solve that like always. Increasing the population does not solve anything itsa short term view with long term problems.

Then we have privatisation what another con, privatisation was supposed to be state free of hand outs, infact ex privitised companies recieve more noew than they did under the state, its a rip off, we spend more money corporate welfare than on social welfare as some of, some social welfare is corporate welfare. Next year we will spend more on aid that on the police, the majority of state aid is coporate aid.
Well the coporations get state aid they also get indierct aid ie tax credits etc.. no wonder there profits are in the billions.
