I've had a MK3 Mondeo TDCI for 2 years now & when I first picked it up in November 2010 I swapped out the standard carp bulbs for a pair of halfords advanced H7 bulbs as they were on offer, whilst light output was improved I was still not impressed. I still found the lights poor in comparison to even my old R-Reg Rover 220 SDi (also ran halfords advanced but in H4) & even my Ford Capri seems to have far better lighting (Running philips vision plus H1 bulbs from 2005).

Due to a change in jobs my commute home now involves a 9 mile drive home which is almost all through unlit NSL roads, a fair bit of which is through woodland populated with deer, i would love to be able to see bambi before she becomes embedded in my radiator.

The bulbs I am running now have got me through 50k+ miles & 2 years of abuse & are still going, would their age have deteriorated their light output meaning a simple bulb swap to osram or philips bulbs will solve my issue or is my problem more than likely the fact that the headlight plastic has many tiny little stonechip marks from nearly 190,000miles of use?

I'll post a pic of the lenses later when the car isn't frozen over.

Howard on here upgraded to Xenons on his ST220. Cost a couple of hundred iirc but light output improved massively.

Are they lights correctly aligned? Could be pointing too low?

I asked this at the MOT yesterday & he said they were fine. I did consider upgrading to Xenons but as you say the headlight units go for a couple of hundred & I can't spare the cash just yet due to changing jobs.

In that case only other option is to install an illegal HID kit in your std headlights.

Any aftermarket headlights the the Mondeo?

If you're prepared to butcher then you can get projector hid kits now.

Might be worth looking into. If not just get some nightbreakers and suffer. The Xenons are a much improved unit but it is not an easy retrofit and requires a fair bit of electrical work.

I used philips xtreme power bulbs in my mk3 and found them brilliant, had them in the car for over 3 years and over 50k miles. I asked the MOT place to put the beam at the highest legal point possible and that made a big difference.

what sort of voltage are you getting at the bulb holders in comparison to battery voltage? Should ideally be no more than 0.5v lower, any more and you have a crusty connection somewhere in the circuit from the relay output onwards or a bad earth.

I've got Osram Nightbreakers in my Fiesta ST and had them in my Punto before the ST. Although they're just a standard replacement bulb. They're so much brighter! Beam coverage is massively improved, and then on full beam, even better!

I'd recommend them

Are the lenses and reflectors in good condition? After the front of the headlamp has been peppered with stone chips for a few years it can cause a surprising reduction in light output.

Also I have found the light output of the ultra bright lamps does tend to degrade with time, I replaced the aged Osram nightbreakers in my Fiat Coupe with a new set and noticed an improvement.
