Debenhams renames coffee.

I can picture the scene.

Customer walks up to debenhams member of staff.

"I'll have a latte please."

"A what?"

"You know a latte."

"latt-ay?"

"Yes a latte."

"Oh you mean a really really milky coffee"

"Yes please"

Can someone link the 'curb your enthusiasm how to order coffee' sketch? Its very fitting and is genius lol, would do so but it's a mare on a blackberry!

I'd love it if you asked for a Cappucino and they just looked at you like you were some sort of creature of the deep, like the cretins in other coffee shops do when you ask for something that isn't wrote on their board.

And they look at you like you've killed their dog.

It's almost like their brains can't cope with something off-script so to speak.

Are there really people who misunderstand the difference between Latte and cappuccino. Most of the menu boards have a description underneath anyway, don't they?

I spend my days doing sales calls into resteraunts and coffee shops, and almost always get offered a coffee:

"can I get you a coffee?"

"yes that would be lovely"

"latte, cappuccino, expresso?"

"Just a coffee please"

"milk, cream, sprinkles?"

"Tea please"

haha Raised a laugh here :D

Makes sense to me. But I would have gone with small and large for the sizes.

Small and Regular, it's amazing what happens when you label something regular, it's the default size people ask for all the time. Back when I was working in a cinema I changed the size of the regular and shop spend went way up.

I do agree on the sizing change though, small or mug is good.

I was also thinking, we got on well enough with other Italian words like pizza, pasta and gnocchi without resorting to calling them bread disk with tomato sauce and cheese, durum wheat shapes or little dumplings. I'm sure people will cope with coffee names.

What would they call Americano?

A shot of strong coffee but dilute it with lots of hot water?

Yes it is isn't it? I have to admit.. Americano is the one that catches me out.. It's when they ask if you want it black or white.. I thought Amercano is an espresso (stronger than filtered) with water as you described??

Coffee in most coffee shop is typically made fresh by starting out as a shot of espresso and then add other ingredients to make your drink. Most coffee shops now gives a double shot as a standard in any cup.

Espresso - shot of coffee, 1oz is 1 shot (7g of grind)
Americano - espresso with hot water
Latte - espresso with hot steamed milk (minimal foam)
Cappuccino - espresso with amount equal amount of steamed milk and foam
Flat white/Macchiato - espresso with little steamed milk (about equal amount of espresso), these 2 are so similar !
Mocha - chocolate flavoured

Filter coffee - coffee grind (grounded more coarse) put through a paper filter with hot water pass through it. This is made in a separate machine, it could be sitting there for hours.

Wet means no foam
Dry means just foam

So you can have a dry cappuccino which basically is espresso with foam.

If you are lactose intolerant then you can substitute it with soy. So you can ask for a Soy Latte. which is a double espresso with steamed soy milk added. Although I like soy and I prefer it over regular milk, so it often confuses them when I want whipped cream on top.

I always as for a "wet" when I order a latte because the foam part is just air so by having it wet means you get more drink.

If you ask for Black Coffee, I would expect you get a cup of filtered coffee, not americano.
