I'm looking at going to Swanwick on the 21st of this month, looking to arrive around midday. This is coming from Glasgow.
I'll need a return, either on the day or the next day.

What would be the cheapest way to do this?

A quick look at Nationrail gives me £152.40 there, and £74.60. I'm wondering if it would be best to fly to one of the London airports and train from there...

I don't know if you noticed but it takes a long time and a good few changes too. So getting there by midday is going to be hard pushed.
Edit: I'm not even sure there's going to be cheap flights either. It might be cheaper to get a hire car.

Oh, I can get a flight for £150 return to Southampton & then get the train from there. I think I'll do that.

Think positive sja ;).

There is no way to arrive at Swanwick by 12pm from Glasgow entirely by train unless you go down the day before or you take the 0428 from Glasgow. Is that an option?

You could also take the Caledonian sleeper, too.

Cheaper to hire a car and drive tbh if its just for a day or two.

I'm 23. Only vehicle company I've found in Glasgow that'll hire to me is Boulevard and their mileage charge will destroy me. Used them once for a house move, but they aren't ideal for a trip like this.

Eh train?? Are you crazy! Flybe go from Glasgow to Southampton.

Yea, I looked at flights as soon as I discovered how much Nationalrail were quoting me. That's going to be the best option I reckon and will probably go for that. As said, it's £150 return which is fine.

I could get that train, but even with your wizardry and me getting 20 tickets I doubt it'll be cheaper than the newly discovered flying option.

Cheers guys.

Its not so much the cost of the train, its just that it'll take like 8hrs or something crazy?

You need to embrace the industry that you are trying to join! :p

And no I'm afraid I can't give you a lift! I've not flown into Glasgow for nearly 5 years now.

I've decided to have a go anyway even though I suspect I am doomed to failure.

Edit: No I'm not. I give up. It's bonkers expensive because there are no Advance tickets available and the time you leave means you need an Anytime ticket which are so hilariously expensive its a wonder anyone bothers.

You can, however, quite easily get a train from Southampton Airport Parkway to Swanwick after your flight :p

Any way other than flying will be a drag. Southampton Airport to Swanwick on the train takes about 10 minutes. Are you visiting the ****pit? If so, that's a 15 minute walk so bring an umbrella :p

Here is what I would do

1. Get a rail card, you're under 25 this costs about £23 and if valid for a year, this will save a 1/3 straight away.
2. Night train is the only way if you want to be there before 12pm on the 21st, this departs at 10:20pm the day before and is via London total £95.35.

OR

3. As stated above get the 04:38 which is £124, gets you in for 12ish.

Good Luck hope she's worth it :D

Pfft try 45 minutes, it's not on the same line so you must change at Southampton Central :p

I've only done it once and it seemed to take 10 minutes. I'd had a skinfull though so appreciation of time may have been skewed.:p

In that case I'd get a taxi from the airport. Few quid more but less hassle.

Last time I went to Swanwick (Was a few years ago now), I got a FlyBe flight to Southampton and then hired a car.

£150 is pretty good for that flight, I've paid more than twice that in the past but that's for a Monday to Thursday trip so as busy as you get on that route.

Indeed neo. I'm doing lots of practice before committing to going. I'm not particularly confident with the cubes, so not really sure it's worth spending all that money on heading down unless I know that I can really nail them.

You'll be 'reet.

Practice a few Speed/Time/Distance calculations. And have a rough idea what the distances between the major European cities are. ;)

I'm assuming you've seen the massive thread on pprune about NATS applications?

How times have changed. They reimbursed all my travel costs during selection. It almost ran into four figures!
