My contract is due for renal at the end of this month.
I'm currently employed in a fixed-term contract. Renewing every 6 months.

From Sept 15th this year it had been 4 years that I have been with this employer.

My knowledge and the interweb have stated that after 4 years a fixed term employee has to be made permenant unless a valid reason can be produced.

I know this has changed resontly but still the same i believe.

The limit on renewing a fixed-term contract

Any employee on a fixed-term contract for 4 or more years will automatically become a permanent employee when their contract is renewed or they are given a new contract.

Just wondering if any 1 with a bit more knowledge in the area can help at all?

However, an employer and unions (or a staff association) may make a collective agreement that removes the automatic right to become a permanent employee in these circumstances

Ask your boss or HR department what they are going to do next.

My boss is a tool and doesn't even know himself.

All he knows is its getting renewed not what type of contract

you gotta be careful though how you go - you may find that if this is not fully understood by HR or they think you may push the issue that at your next extension date you are dropped - try and figure out if the company wants to remain employing contractors or would be happy with another permanent head on their books.

contractors and fixed term are different.

We have loads of contractors here over half the head count are and on stupid money.

I'm waiting till I have the extension in my hand before I raise the point

yes I know at my last place when it looked like I was going to be there as a contractor past the 1 year mark there was the question of dropping a load of us due to some misunderstood employment law worry that HR had made up - most of us had no intention of becoming a permie of the company and signed off that we wouldn't pursue any employee benefits (not that we were due any anyway) and we carried on (6 more months for me).

Would never consider the fixed term contract thing unless desperate for a job - as I see it none of the benefits of a permie (bar holiday and sick if you are lucky)and none of the benefits of a contractor i.e rates.
