Damage only car accident - Need advice

You agreed with the other guy to repair outside of insurance.
You gave him the value requested leaving you to get your car repaired however you deem fit. As long as he didnt actually call the police they will have no record of the accident.

You certainly cant now goto the insurance company saying you hit someone I wouldn't think. Did he take any other details from you? Reg? Tel no?

My concern would be he pockets yer money and goes home and phones his insurance company stating you went into the back of him, wide open for a whiplash claim :(

I think he might have quickly taken down my reg of which I then did the same. He was the first to leave the accident while I stayed their for abit on the side of the road and called some people before I left about 10mins later.

This.

Did you get his details, did he get yours?

Really easy
Aha yes it could have been a lot worse. But being my first year of driving I don't want my insurance any higher than it is already. More angry at my self than anything, I'm normally so careful when driving, but I just couldn't stop in time and just didn't know what to do :/

Oh and technically you need to declare this road traffic incident to your insurance company.

Of course the reason you paid him was to avoid telling them but technically you should. They normally ask for any previous accidents whether your fault or not, they don't ask for any previous accidents you were responsible for and that resulted in a payment from the insurance company.

Your 99% likely to never have any comeback from your actions however.

Your lucky, there can often be more damage to bumpers than is visibly apparent, they are designed to absorb the impact and hence take the energy internally.

Chalk this up to experience and leave a bigger gap next time to the car in front of you. The WHOLE point in the stuff you learn't in your test about stopping distances was to take into account thinking time and actual ability to stop in a distance IF the person in front decides to stop suddenly.

If things don't go any further you have got off easy. One thing to take from this - mind your distance.

Ok so I just got in my fist car accident :'(, Bloke suddenly stopped and I had no chance to stop in time.

Overall I came worse off, he had a small dent in a bottom plastic bumper and a broken numberplate while I have got a nice dent in my bonnet and will have to get a whole new front bumper as the bar under it might be pushed in a little.

He asked for my insurance information of which I didn't know and said he will have to call the police and proceeded to go back to his car to do so.

He was an oldish bloke who seemed pretty calm so I explain to him calmly being 18 if we could sort this out on a personal basis seeing as my insurance is stupidly high as it is and I need the car to get too and from University.

He looked at the damage and said he could bump out the plastic and get a new number plate for £20. So I gave him the £40 that I had to hand and he went off on his way.

So basically how bad is the situation, how liable am I and have I done anything wrong here. Pretty shaken up to say the least, even if it was only at 20mph if that.

Thanks for any advice!

You would have had the chance to stop if you drove correctly, This is why i think driving tests are far to easy, and people under 20 should not be able to drive.

If you had driven into my car i would have taken a pic of ur license and u and the car and opened a can of whoop ass on your insurance.

I failed my test 3 times, it was hard, But i don't think it was hard enough.

I failed my test once and didn't do one of these crappy 2 week pass things. I spent way over a grand on my driving lessons and put in way more time than most people do. I drive 70 miles every day to Uni and haven't done anything this stupid before, it was simply an off day. But none the less I see where you are coming from.

Accidents happen...

Everything and everyone can't be 100% all of the time.

I don't think being older actually makes you a better driver. Someone with poor judgement will have poor judgement whether they're 17 or 35. The earlier you start getting experience, the younger you'll be when you have sufficient experience to be considered an experienced driver.

Oh grow up; accidents happen. People are not robots as they don't perform 100% all the time hence it happens. I've done the same, felt guilty exchanged details blah blah blah... but at the end of it you learn.

Stupid/careless/dangerous driving through deliberate actions is another matter so don't get the two confused (like excessive speeding, swerving, racing etc)

Grow up. He had an accident - they happen. What benefit would putting it through the insurance have? It'd put your own premium up too, or don't you realise this?

Thanks for all the wise words people. Think I did the right thing. Hopefully the damage to his car isn't bad enough for him to have to claim for it but only time will tell.

Like already said I got off lightly, could have easily have happend at a faster speed or have been a kid stepping out in the road that I wasn't able to stop for.

Counting my self lucky and just going to have to learn for the experience I guess. Bit of a bummer as I was on the way to watch the new Skyfall movie :( XD

Again thanks!

Count yourself lucky in a couple of weeks if no letter comes thru your letter box from a claims company, until then, your being a bit premature as ive seen the same thing happen before, both parties agree to settle at the side of the road, then a bombshell lands on your doorstep because the other driver "realises" they've got whiplash...

Well if that happens he is claiming on the wrong guy. Being a University student I have no money for my self let alone money to give him.

He seemed like an alright bloke anyway, old-ish in a suit with a poppy on so hopefully he is decent about it. But hay their is nothing I can do now anyway.
