Once I have charged it up, I will download the tools and have a look..

Under settings>extras+info I get some additional info

Manufacturer Model Name

Mobile Operator Name
ORG-GB
Configuration ID

Cool.

I can see where the other chap on XDA went wrong. Flashing a RM-821 firmware on a RM-820 (US Model) isn't going to work as they run different frequencies etc..

Should a Virgin Media sim work in these sim-free phones?

Highly likely to yes. My Lumia 800 is O2 locked and I'm using Giffgaff SIM in it fine (they use O2 network).

Well, I've been watching this thread with interest (though missed the part about the fact that it's SIM-free locked - which is mental, no-one does this.

I suspect the phone stock is all for contracts and therefore Nokia shipped EE locked devices. They're selling phones meant for contract on SIM free, what I mean is the SIM free and contract phones are identical when they should be different.

I've requested a SIM unlock code from one of those unlocking places who reckon they can do it ($60 for the privilege though).

They tend to refund if they can't help. You have 10 attempts, after that it has to go back to a service centre to be reactivated.

That's awesome! If you've got a full length mirror or something fancy trying out individual body parts or something?

Yeah, when you press the button it puts squares over anything that was moving to isolate it then you can add or remove extra parts around it.

So what is the process then for doing this, should I start by googling for lumia 800 guides to get a feel for it or is WP8 a different beast?

That's interesting as I saw that on there - might give it a run if it'd unlock it...

You basically, use the same principle as the Lumia 800.

So it would be.

1. Downloaded firmware
2. Rename the firmware to the same product code as the current handset.
3. Flash - Refurbish the device in Nokia Care Suite
4. Enjoy de-branded firmware

The only PITA is getting the USB drivers to load, these come bundled with Nokia Care suite but may need a extra install. So it means a bit of faffing to start with, once you're up and running you good to go.

Am I missing something? That doesn't look like a good deal at all, £100 up front and with £51 per month:

12 month total £712
24 month total £1324

So for the contract you're paying £262 if it's 12 months and £874 if it's 24 month...

Yeah but was gonna cost me £515 for a sim free one plus 12x£12 giffgaff. I also wouldn't of got a charging plate. would have been tasked with getting rid of my smashed iphone4 myself.

I know its still slightly more but convinced myself im happy with the deal and have my phone now.

Also glad i saw it in person not a fan of the shiny ones and i did have a red one preordered but now i have a nice matte black.

Ok, will read up on a few guides and have a go at this later or tomorrow, Im wondering whether to stick a Vodafone IT firmware revision on as that is the network I want..
1244.3011 is EE firmware
1242.1010 is the Italian Vodafone revision
1242.1001 seems to be the only other revision that has GB firmware
