Been happening for a while but wasn't always like this.

Tried updating to latest NV drivers.

Video will pause with audio running, then go black and eventually recover where it was playing (VLC).

During browsing cursor freezes then screen goes black and I get

'display driver kernel has stopped responding and has recovered'

I wonder if one of the 470's has crapped out on me.

I'm taking them both down to stock clocks and volts now and see if that does it.

If not I might disable a card at a time in device manager and see what I get.

I've also had a few instances of check-pattern artifacting in video too.
Temps are all ok as cards are under water.

Any ideas?

850MHz is quite on the high side for them the voltage needed to get them there stable might have degraded one of the cards maybe.

Tho my money would be on the motherboard I've never had much joy with Asus motherboards but thats just me.

yeh Rroff they're they've always been on max volts.
Games seem ok as far as I can tell.

The mobo has always struggled to recognise both cards.
95% of boots I don't see anything till desktop is loaded.
I don't see bios prompts or the windows loading symbol, the monitor gets no input signal till desktop!
Weird though it sorta works so I left it...

I would go with volts being the issue. This used to happen to me when I had a 560ti and after a small voltage increase, I never did see that error again. Maybe drop the clocks slightly or if you can, raise them slightly. It could be chip degredation that has bought it on recently.

damn its still happening at base frequencies and volts.

What to do next?
Shut a card down at a time as per my plan?

Probably not the issue if it only just started but trying doing a clean install (with that option ticked) of the nVidia drivers without HD Audio drivers selected (unless your actually using them).

well I went back to first 470, the MSI one. For a while things seemed fine but its just been crashing again.
Will have to try the cheaper 470 and see how he does.
If not i'll give Rroffs idea a go

Gonna try Rroffs Idea now after getting global artifacting at desktop yesterday:(

Rroff that worked!
Thanks so much.
Now I see the full BIOS screens/splash screens, windows load logo all the way through to desktop.
No more crashes in video, mouse cursor freezing or blacks screens with kernel recovery.
Guess the NV Sound drivers were really hassling with the D1 soundcard all of a sudden.

Got my bad boys clocked up to 850mhz each and theyre happy as:)
