Hi, i'm looking to buy myself a new build but haven't upgraded for a while now and i'm completely lost trying to understand the best hardware for a reasonable price.
I want a something that will run my games (e.g. BF3, Skyrim, Shogun 2 etc) at the highest specs with good FPS and which won't need much/if any upgrading for about 2 years or so.
I don't know if i'm asking a lot but looking to spend around £1000 if possible, don't mind too much if i go over as long as it's justified.
Monitor, mouse and keyboard not needed.
Need a case too.

Thanks, advice would be appreciated :)

Thanks.

Right now i have;
CPU - core 2 quad 2.4GHz
GPU - 9800 GT
2GB RAM

Haven't bought anythin new for a long time and need of an upgrade.

No OS needed no.

Cheers Doomedspeed :) that's a good start.

Do you think there will be much point in going up to around £1200 or will the improvements be minimal? Just want the best value for my price range really.

I will be running Win8 on the new PC i think.

You could tart it up a bit, add a bigger ssd etc but it'd just be icing the cake really.
That spec is all you really need until you feel like adding another gpu and/or upgrading your monitor if need be.

If anything, I'd say get a 3770k if you plan on going xfire and getting the most out of it. Not strictly necessary, but advantageous nonetheless.

Ok then thanks this has been a big help guys :D i'll do a little more research and let you know my decision. Looking to buy within the next couple of weeks so any more guidance i'd be grateful

If you're going for a 7950, you absolutely must upgrade that or the card'll be utterly wasted :)

Grab the above spec (unless offers change by the time you're buying) with an MSI Twin Frozr 3 or HIS IceQ 7950 and a 24" 1920x1080 monitor if you're happy to spend up to £1200 (It'll be less).
You could save on the mobo/psu if you have no desire for xfire.

Happy days :D

Just ask if you need monitor recommendations.

Monitors aren't really my forte I'm afraid...
I could recommend a bunch that'd do a good job, but I think someone with more experience/knowledge in that field should advise you there.

If nobody jumps in here, try the monitors sub-forum :)

Take a look at these:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Benq XL2411T 24" TRUE 120Hz 3D Vision 2.0 Widescreen LED Monitor - Black/Red £239.99
1 x Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24" Widescreen LED Monitor - Midnight Grey £229.99
1 x Dell Studio S2340L 23" IPS Widescreen LED Monitor - Black £164.99
1 x Asus VG23AH 23" 3D IPS Widescreen LED Monitor - Black £155.99
Total : £815.08 (includes shipping : £20.10).

Either a choice between an IPS screen, 120Hz display or 1200p. Each have their own advantages IMO. Depends on how much cash you have to throw at it too.

As great as a 7950 currently is, I'm not sure if it could really take advantage of a 120hz screen in heavy games like BF3/Shogun2/Modded Skyrim. Well, not with everything turned right up at least.

Very happy for someone to prove me wrong coz I want to buy one :D

How about 27" 1080p?

YOUR BASKET
1 x BenQ G2750 27" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black £199.99
Total : £211.99 (includes shipping : £10.00).

There are plenty of good 24" 1080 screens for around £150 or so too.

Is there any way to find out how much it would cost to have this built for me using the system configuration? I don't see some of these components listed in the options available.

You could ask OcUK to build your spec for a small fee, but it really isn't a difficult job.
Most things can only be plugged into their corresponding slot/socket. Not much harder than lego tbh :)

thanks for the guidance. I've placed an order for pretty much the spec you guys recommended but now i've got to make a decision on a new monitor. I have posted in the monitors section too. Looking to spend up to about £300 on whichever best suits my needs, i.e. mostly gaming. Any more ideas?

Plenty of choices.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Benq XL2410T 24" TRUE 120Hz 3D Widescreen LED Monitor - Black £259.99
1 x Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24" Widescreen LED Monitor - Midnight Grey £229.99
1 x BenQ GW2450HM 24" Widescreen LED Professional Monitor - Black £129.95
Total : £644.05 (includes shipping : £20.10).

For pure gaming, the 120hz above or the ones previously posted.
For great all round image quality and good gaming, the IPS Dell.
To save a bit of cash and still get great image quality, the BenQ GW24 with it's nice VA panel.

There are a few decent 27" monitors in your price range too.

What spec did you go for in the end?
