Windows 8 The Verdicts ?

Allthough I find myself using the metro ui once every blue moon I have to say Windows 8 is excellent

Hoping a few more drivers will come out in good time but all in all I'm impressed visually it's stunning IMO the tweaks in file explorer are excellent had no hiccups in games at all

Windows 8 installed don't have any complaints quite easy to use games work fine plays my films and music with out any hicups

Just wait and see what happens 6 months down the line hopefully a nicer looking desktop and improved drivers ..yes im looking at you asus

I installed it to try yesterday and hated it, what were they thinking?

I played around for a while, struggled to find things, didn't understand the concept and gave up.

It's a shame as I wanted things like native USB 3.0 support and some of the other great things.

Installed it, hated it for a day..... now i think its great. I have found it pushes me away from using the mouse which is a good thing. Fresh and quick!

You gave up too easily. The concepts are not difficult on their own, there are just a bunch of them that hit you all at once. If you try to take them all on board concurrently your brain is just going to bottom out.

Reluctantly bought / downloading now :p

Not gonna grumble at £24.99 though... well, maybe after I use the Metro UI. I think this OS will take me a while to get used to, it just looks something I'd give to my mum to use rather than use myself. Willing to give it a shot though rather than just moan about it without trying it although really hope I don't end up hating it and have to reinstall Windows 7 again. Was nice to read the thread though and get lots of different opinions.

That's what free previews are for, flibby :p

I know pensioners who have picked this up quicker than some of the nerds on this forum. It's frightening!

Yes but most of the geeks are on autopilot when using the OS. The new UI is like throwing up a giant cognitive roadblock and that's precisely why we see a lot of people doing a complete 180 in their opinion. After they have figured it out, most people like it or are at least indifferent.

Well, bought, installed, played around with it for a couple of hours...

That's a shockingly derogatory statement to make against older people and I suspect may be illegal. Shame on you sir.

I quite like Windows 8, in many ways it's a very good OS, but I have struggled to navigate my way around the lack of a start menu.

After testing various start menu replacements, StartIsBack is clearly the one for me. Now I have the original start menu back with the added convenience of "Apps", everything just feels right again now and I have the best of both worlds.

Chris.

One trick I would like to be able to do (I'm sure someone will tell me this is possible) is to be able to search from the Desktop whilst remaining in Desktop e.g. search down the right side of screen?

So basically you have upgraded to Windows 7.1 not Windows 8? I'm not keen on the Modern UI but I refuse to go backwards, otherwise what't the point? I will eventually get the hang of this new system and when I get fed up I just minimise the VM and I'm back with Mountain Lion. :D

You're probably best off with a dedicated desktop search program, or search within File Explorer.

See now this is where I find 8 clunky. If this was 7 then I could just search from the start button or if using OS X then spotlight does the job. Neither would take me away from what I'm doing. This is where someone has forgotten to join the dots.
