I think 'scripting' is the wrong term, has the wrong connotations. It almost feels like 'form' in games, when your team is 'off' and theirs is 'on' you get horrible feeling games. Plus the weird sort of momentum / rubber-banding you feel that change in games. I dunno.
Indeed. It seems to be a mixture of phenomena which affect the game.
a) Players feeling sluggish, slow, or unresponsive. This can happen from the start of a match, at a random point in the match or after an event (i.e. goal from either side). I can understand the idea behind it - when you concede a goal, it can dump a team's spirits/morale. However, it significantly affects your ability to play. The game should be about the person's ability, combined with the players themselves, morale/spirit should be reflected in how you play after conceding, not on a dice roll to see if the players decide to go emo. That said, it happens at random times, so it doesn't even fit in with what you might expect of a 'real' football match.
b) One team scoring at will, while the other constantly hits the post/misses/saved. I respect the fact that one team can take their chances better than the opponent, but sometimes it's just so imbalanced that it becomes ridiculous. Goals that would 9/10 go in, will hit the post, go wide or the keeper becomes an acrobatic madman saving shots that would normally have them subject to medical testing as a result of these superhuman reflexes. Or instead, they can just shoot and score whenever they feel like. It's just not conducive to a proper, enjoyable game of FIFA.
c) Players inexplicably doing retarded things. I can't tell you how many times I've had a player of mine make bizarre runs, or peel off attackers at ridiculous times. Or fall over, suddenly having the strength of soggy bread, or slow down to ridiculous speeds. I position a player perfectly to receive a cross only for them to either run the other way, not even attempt to get the ball, or stop me from getting into position in the first place.
d) Rubbish player switching. Why does it insist on cycling through players not even near the ball, while I have a defender running alongside an attacker who I need to be controlling to intercept a cross? Madness.
e) Passing. No, don't pass to the person in space, unmarked on goal, pass to the person at the back post surrounded by defenders - oh and make sure the ball is passed slowly across the ground so that the defenders or goalkeeper can pick it up. Or hey, we're on the break, free players either side, no, pass backwards instead. trololol
I lost 5-2 in the cup final, why? I was 2-0 at half-time, he was fairly average, but scored a couple of goals while I was being a bit sloppy. Second half, I picked up my game, scored two back. Then it's fairly tight until the 80th minute, and he scores 3 in the space of 5 minutes, ridiculous goals, bizarre volleys and my defenders are nowhere to be found. My players can't pass, they don't make runs, everything just goes wrong. It's a sudden change, not a gradual shift in play due to superior play, it's a sudden change from playing average to playing godlike.
And yet they fob people off with "there's no handicap" or whatever. Pfft, okay. It's not like EA have ever lied before.
