My Dog Eats Its Own Poo

We have just taken in a beagle puppy who is 3 months old, he has this unsettling habit of eating his own turds.

Usually by the time you get some paper to pick it up he has eaten some of the poo, we do clean up his mess but we can't get in there quickly enough. A lot of the time only one of us can look after him as people are at work so there's no one to restrain him.

Strangely if he does it in his cage (we're keeping him in a big cage when he goes to bed at night until he gets through the chewing phase to save the kitchen furniture) he won't eat it and just ignores it

Anything I can do? I'm going to gently him give a slap on the nose next time he does it.

Thanks :o

All pretty normal for a puppy. Basically (like vomit), a dog's nose can smell the protein and goodness that hasn't been digested through the vomit / poo, and see's it as viable food.

The best thing to do is go out with the dog and pick it up immediately. A swift, but loud "no" will do the trick in due course

Its a known and common condition in dogs. (Google Coprophagia).

You can get things to put in their food which makes the poo taste nasty for them (Yes i know...) to try and stop them. Most pet shops stock them in blister packs.

Or you can better still try and assess if there is anything causing it, like nervousness around how he is handled, time left alone. Also look at his diet - It might not be adequate.

Pretty normal, one of our dogs never stopped doing it, and now it eats the other dog's **** as well. Chili powder quickly sprinkled on it's logs will make it stop sharpish, but obviously give it a few months first :p

Oh I missed the bit about the slap on the nose - DONT do that. You will create behavioural issues with your dog. You should never revert to such things.

So why does he ignore it when he does it in the cage? I don't understand that bit.

If you tell him off when ever he drops a coil and you notice then maybe he tries to hide the evidence, if het stats in his own cage maybe he doesn't think you will care or notice.

I would just try and get him toilete trained so he asks to go outside to do his stuff. Our dogs tended to associate a particular stuffed toy as a signal to be let out, when watching TV they would bring you the toy and put a paw put as a signal, we would let them out the door to go pee.

Why dont you eat the poo before the puppy can eat it?

Pretty obvious if you think about it.

jesus beaten so hard lol
