I am currently playing through Metro 2033 again after completing it about a year ago and it strikes me how awesome the atmosphere of the game is. Am playing on a 27" monitor with the lights down low and my headset quite high and with the attention to detail and superb sound quality it's so engrossing.
What's your favourite game for overall atmosphere? A game that when you play you get lost in the world it's created.

Wow for me :) I do like to adventure into the open world!

Also assassins creed , love the open world

Dead Space - I found it 'uncomfortable' to play.

The Witcher, especially the 'Midday Bride' story - truly brilliant.

Yeah, Bioshock was really good as well. Maybe because the sound was so good? Not that it was a bad looking game at all but I still remember the sound of the lights coming on when you first get in the tower at the start and then the the mad hook creature when you are in the lift, also the sound of the vending machines and the booming footsteps of the big daddy's :) Might have to give that another play through!

I highly recommend any of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games and Alan Wake - absolutely incredible atmospheres in both (especially with Stalker modded).

Can't remember but the saboteur has awesome atmosphere, never completed it but will if I can get it on PC cheap

For me Fallout 3 and New Vegas had great atmosphere and to give the feel of a desolate wasteland, even with the comical feel of the game. The interiors look more grey and drab to give a more depressing feel. :p The ambient music helps a lot.

Also, as others have mentioned, Bioshock, Deadspace, STALKER.

Atomsphere is what you make it. For example; I don't find Fallout all that atmospheric, but right now I've grabbed the fellout lighting mod which adds dark nights. Some monster and difficulty mods along with hardcore mode in New Vegas. Running around without a map, in the pitch black, no food or water and starving/dehydrated and tired, hearing horrible noises in the distance and not sure where I'm going... yeah, thats bloody good immersion/atmosphere.

Oh the most atmospheric game that I have ever played is the original Alien versus Predator and it's sequel Alien versus Predator 2. Ok that's two games lol. But seriously, they were scary games. Playing as a marine in either of those games in a dark room with the music turned, so it's just the sound effects.

Beep, beep, beep....... ARRGGHHHHHHHHHH

I don't think I have played any game that has come close to the nerve wrecking dread I had playing those. They were awesome. Played them both mulitple times.

Doom3 Started out well, but didn't maintain it. Dead space was another good effort I thought but still just a pale imitation of the mind numbing terror that I had playing AVP :-)

Ah yeah the original AvP has to be high on that list its probably laughable now but at the time it was the only game that I felt a bit uneasy playing alone in the house.

Story line games in no order
vampire masquerade bloodlines ( The haunted hotel.....play it you will see what I mean )
Fallout Series
Spec Ops The Line
