Windows 8 The Verdicts ?

It's not that bad, you click window key and just type something and it works. If you want to exit this search just hit Esc twice and your back to desktop. In this search you can tell it to search inside apps and if you don't have an app you can search inside the store so it's pretty powerful if you want it to be.

What is this fabled "workflow" you speak of? What are you doing that requires you cannot leave it even though it's still running?

Workflow is workflow - it matters not what I am doing, the point is I shouldn't have to leave what I am doing in order to move to a full screen app to perform such a simple task as "search".

I might ask why you are acting as an apologist for a poorly implemented task?

I bet the answer is "pretending I am using an Apple machine!"

Oh dear! you just cannot accept that something is poorly executed can you? I have been using Windows since the early days of DOS but that doesn't stop me being critical of MS when it is warranted. Try to be a tad more objective eh, your attempt at sarcasm does you little credit.

And in 7 you just search - end of, no selecting apps, settings etc. If you think search in 8 is better executed than it is in 7 then I say you are easily suited. If I was using a Surface tab then I might think differently. Stop watching videos of the world according to Balmer and see it for what it is. I will stick with 8 in the hope it improves in 9 but I'm not going to pretend 8 is the bees knees when it's not, I think it's a work in progress.

um well tbh I never really use these search features, I'll use spotlight a bit but not that much. In windows I have everything set as I like it mainly using pinned apps on the desktop. I'm a senior .net developer so use a fair amount of apps, programs, files and so on but just seem to remember where they all are ;)

Problem with that you get people moaning or disliking something about Win9 and 10 etc(infact on every new OS ,"search" is a common dislike theme ie Vista,7,8 etc..).... it never stops, you know its true.

I do like the search in Metro however ie just hit any key and bang it goes into search mode,I'm a desktop/gamer user by default and don't find it any worst then Win7 to be honest,I spend 99% of my time on desktop, however I got my desktop so perfect its not hard to find what I want.

its cack lets face it

everything ive known about the way windows works gets turned upside down,i keep having to click in the corners to get anywhere all so tablet users can have their way

It's been running on a spare laptop here for a couple of weeks now, and it's not terrible, it just doesn't really offer anything over Windows 7 that's relevant to me. I really hope they tweak the multi monitor support, it's pretty much unusable at the moment.

When you think about it, Its not much different to going down and clicking task bar.
You can still do Win key plus Tab for switching.

Because its not poorly implemented IMHO, in fact its well implemented, especially once you get used to using your PC two handed and not just with the mouse, as it dramatically improves "workflow."

I haven't updated my work PC's yet, but I will be doing this week and to be honest I feel a little naked on my works window 7 PC's now I've got used to 8.

Uhm, you had to go the corner before.....

Especially when running multiple screens, hitting the corner can be frustrating.
Yes i have a keyboard with a million shortcuts to use. But that's not entirely intuitive/natural, as i use just the mouse to do most things.

But hell, smart move by Microsoft because lets face it, what choice do most of us have?
I just wish they phased it in smoother, like Apple have done whilst merging OS X and iOS.

I've used it some more and i still stand to my original point/s.
IMO It's not designed with desktop enthusiast in mind. It works great with laptops and will do with tablets i'm sure (haven't tried a tablet yet, but i think that's obvious). The combination of W8/RT, Phone 8 and Office 2013 looks great, makes sense and works.
I will be using it on laptop with Office 2013, it's great for that use given what i use it for and the way you use the touchpad and keyboard. However, it just doesn't work for me in the way i use my desktop PC.

You have to wonder how things have gone if the guy responsible for Win8 has been given the heave-ho. Intriguing. I'm looking forward to the TWIT network's Windows Weekly podcast more than normal.

Really? That IS interesting. Any release on why they gave him the boot?

The news is all over the place. Everyone seems to be making it sound amicable, and his choice. But that seems unlikely given the personalities involved.

Of course it may well be that he's just had enough, Win8 has hit all its initial targets, and he feels this is a good time to go. But what kind of a story is that? :-)

Yeah my office PC is multiple screen so that may become annoying....

From various witness accounts Sinofsky was just an irritating pain in the arse. Treating people like crap, railroading his ideas through etc. Like Steve Jobs I suppose, but without the ideas to back up the attitude.
