No preference to red or green - tried both, and been happy with both in the past.

Both cards cost the same ( not neccessarily from OcUK )

For 1080p gaming.

The contenders;

MSI GeForce GTX 670 OC Twin Frozr Power Edition 2048MB

Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7970 Windforce 3X 3072MB

The MSI card is clocked out of the box and virtually matches a GTX680 in the benchies i've looked at, hence the comparison.

Which would you go for ?

Want Physx? Go for the 670. Want a faster card? Go for the 7970, heck even go for the 7950 and OC it.

670 is a good card but it's not the value for money card it was months ago.

Save some money and get the Gigabyte WF 3x 7950. It'll be within 5% (probably less) than a similar 7970 and it's over a £100 cheaper.

If you want the best you can get for your money then a 7970 will be your choice really. However, I have read that the Gigabyte WF cards are hard voltage locked so perhaps someone can shed some light on this...

The 7950 is the card to go for and Gigabyte being the best choice for warranty. The 7950 offers the best value/performance and is a stonking card. The 670 however offers decent performance, PhysX and the easiest drivers to install. Sometimes little things are worth a little extra :)

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 680 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE Borderlands 2 & Assassin's Creed III PC Games £347.99
Total : £358.79 (includes shipping : £9.00).

I know this is a 680 but at this price, I have to recommed it for Team Green.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte ATi Radeon HD 7950 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE FARCRY3, Hitman Absolution, Sleeping Dogs & 20% off MOH Warfighter PC Games £259.99
Total : £271.39 (includes shipping : £9.50).

This 7950 is great value and gives stonking performance :)

The cheapest decent 670 is £300 for OCUK so its £40 difference with postage, but like greg says the Nvidia software part may be worth the difference?

Still this close to Xmas id rather wait until after for an upgrade? Im upgrading but not on your level.

Went through a similar thought process myself a couple of months back and went in the end for the MSI 670 PE. As you point out yourself, similar performance to a stock 680 out of the box. Also looks good and runs cool / quiet. Most (including mine) also seem to OC pretty well.

Though obviously there are plenty of good cards around at the moment and I doubt if any of the cards suggested so far would/will disappoint.

Unless looking for the best bang-for-buck, then I think personally it's pretty much pick the card you fancy.

Good luck whatever you decide.

I don't understand why a 670 is in the same sentence as a 7970, should be the 7950 as the 7970 goes up against the 680 imo, but 7970 hands down.

The GTX 670 is a nice card, and if you need the Physx you can't go wrong with it. But performance wise, the 7970 is a level above, especially when overclocked. It even beats the 680 after the recent release of updated drivers.
