New Car Tax/Insurance Quick Question

Hi guys,

I'm picking my new car up on Saturday. I am paying the guy cash on the day, but the car has no tax. As I haven't paid in full for the car he hasn't sent off the log book with me as the new owner yet. I have insured the car saying that I am the current owner (as I will be).

Is there going to be any issues taxing the car? As far as I am aware I only need to take my certificate of insurance and MOT certificate with me to tax it. Will they want to see the log book too? The logbook isn't in my name yet...

Thanks guys.

You normally need to take the V5 with you for taxing a car, but you can tax it using the new keepers supplement (assuming you got it from the previous owner!).

He has it all with the car. We we're going to do everything on the day. I'm just not sure how to go about it all.

Straight to the post office with the 'new keepers supplement' (the bit of the V5 the seller will give you), the insurance certificate, and the MOT certificate (if the car's more than 3 years old).

Should be no problems.

Ok. Cool. I'm assuming there won't be any issues with insurance as technically I am not the owner of the car at the moment?

You will be the owner of the car when the seller gives you the new keepers supplement. The insurance certificate will say on it when the insurance is valid from, which will be the day you pick up the car. You can't tax it till then.

Stop panicking. It's not that difficult :D

To save yourself the bother on the day, you could ask him to tax it for 12 months and add that to the cost of the car.

The car is already insured under my name. I had to do it this way to keep my old car insured. Long story. it looks as though it should be ok though so I'm cool :p
