My Surface for Windows RT Review

Im pretty sure MS will absolutely scalp Google when it comes to OS updates.
They already have a big update coming for the RT next week.
And as said, it can be inconsistent, doing some heavy duty multitasking, but then small things tripping it up, I still feel it will be a big change in a few months of updates.
The problem for me in mos regards I dont think are hardware related, jsut buggy software.

Well this is good, mine has died on me mid use.

K, working again, that wasnt fun, 10 mins of it being a brick!.

Is their a way to link the Music library on desk top to a folder on the SD card?

Go into control panel, administrator tools, computer management, disk management, right click the drive you want to set as a folder, change drive letter and paths, click change and then mount in the following empty NTFS directory.

Good review, however don't agree with the office rt but.
Pretty much anyone using it for commercial purposes will be fully licensed. To get office rt licensed for comercial only requires you to hold a license of one out of several normal office license. So pretty much everyone needed it for comercial will be able to use it legally.

Great review :)

I think the performance issues you see are down to the single channel 32 bit controller the RT uses at the moment. Next years model will solve these with A15 class hardware.

Ok, if you're a Surface owner you need to install this firmware upgrade. You should have a bunch of other updates pending at the same time. The process took about 10 minutes for me.

There is a significant performance increase.

Downloaded and installed, have to use it a bit to see what noticeable things have worked. However, it seems MS are set to work on this with the updates and support.

Good to hear theheyes, nice when you get regular updates :)

Yeah, I said in my review it was nailed on certainty and there would be at least something they could do with software updates.

Flash still isn't perfect, but it no longer does that annoying jitter on the start screen when you exit an app. Plus a couple of the games I tried are miles better. Hydro Thunder Hurricane is a good one to try before and after.

It was never in doubt really. Its no surprise that IE10 for Windows 7 has appeared too. It was pretty obvious Microsoft were really stretched in the run up to Windows 8.

Is it me or is IE10 faster?

Also I just went to the desktop and checked for updates as you would on the PC. Is their now prompt on the start screen about the update?

Hmmm.

The firmware update failed for me :( and it's not letting me have a second go.

Code 800F020B

Can somebody else check under control panel View update history and confirm there's installed successfully.

Is there anyway of seeing what my firmware version is?

Has the update improved app launch times? This is one of the few things that's making me wary of pulling the trigger on the Surface.

How long was delivery from submitting on the website? I got a 64GB one arriving at some stage.

Also has anyone come across a SSH client?

Just spied this which is interesting: http://www.nvidia.com/object/tegra-3-processor.html

It says that the Tegra 3 has a 5th Battery Saver Core which handles low-power tasks like active standby, music, and video, and is transparent to the OS and applications.

It also says that Windows RT support for this is still in development, so at some point we'll get another firmware update and the bonus of an extra core.

Yes, by how much I couldn't say but it feels like they're more consistent than before and stability/consistency does add a lot to the user experience.

It's a shame I don't have a second unit to do a before and after comparison.

Grrrr, I don't know whether to get one of these or not....
I have an iPad3 which is cool and all but I really like the whole Surface and Windows ecosystem.

If we had more info on Surface Pro or if some of the OEMs were close to shipping Pro tablets then the decision would be easier. As we stand with no release schedules and no pricing info it's hard to decide.
