Portrayed, in this instance, by the Advertising Standards Authority who responded to a flood of complaints from people claiming the ad was "irresponsible and condoned dangerous driving." We say a flood. It was actually just two. Nonetheless, the ASA upheld the complaints and scolded Toyota, telling it "not to portray speed or driving behaviour in a way that might encourage motorists to drive irresponsibly in future." If you want to feel really depressed about the (nanny) state of the world you can read the full adjudication here.

Pathetic. This has really annoyed me.

How is it Injury Layers 4 U (Innniiiittt claim some compensation whiplash brruuuuuv) adverts are all over the place like a cancer yet the GT86 advert is pulled following 2 complaints.

/Rant

Is this the one where the car starts in a virtual reality world and then breaks out into the real world?

I did see that and think it went against what the guys from VW said in that Top Gear episode where they made an advert for the Scirocco.

Just lol that they banned it though.

banning adverts showing enjoyable driving isn't going to cause people to drive like ****s. They will do that on their own.

Stopping cigarettes being visible behind the counter will not stop people smoking.

Etc. etc.

What a crock of ****.

Still, could be worse, could be living in Saudi or something.

So we can have tonnes of adverts encouraging us to sue for every little thing, online casinos, 10000000000% APR payday loans, fast food, booze and bingo adverts that encourage fraud yet you show someone breaking out from the dullness of driving and that has to be banned.

Feels like we are living in Saudi, bar the weather. People getting arrested for poppy burning photo's, advertisements for sports cars banned for being sporty....

absolutely bonkers to take off a very stylish advert when as said so many other questionable ads get to stay.

I doubt its because of the ad, but more because it got some complaints. I expect if people complained about a lot of other adverts they would be banned too.

I wonder if it was a couple of top Subaru bosses who complained :D

I feel this problem is easy enough to sort!

Think about it though. The rules say you can't refer to speeds over 70mph or "demonstrate power, acceleration, handling characteristics etc except in a clear context of safety. Any references to such characteristics must not imply excitement or competitiveness."

They need to find an NSL country road, show a sheep and perhaps a cow crossing it, then the cars ability to avoid them, you could also throw in a few kids for good measure.

Job done.

Perhaps we should all complain about the Adverts these PC correct idiots like, get those banned.

The only advert I have genuinely enjoyed recently, and see's Toyota go back to it's Supra and Celica roots with a new GT tourer, and they ban it *******, *****!!

Welcome to the communist UK.

Ha ha post 666 for me , I am the devil ......lol

Didn't volvo do exactly that?

Maybe have an advert where the GT-86 avoids a group of ASA execs tied up in the middle of the road due to it's superior handling. Then have a Land Cruiser plough into them shortly after.
