Hi,

My names Michel (French) a man (I sensed the confusion) and i built my own PC back in 2007 and i used this forum for help and advise (Although i never posted) i just took TONS of information from members who knew what they were talking about and bought my parts and did my build.

I did a (Jan 2007) :

C2D Conroe E6600 (I OC'd it to 3.0Ghz on Stock Cooler)
2GB Crucial Ram DDR2
7950GT GFX Card (512MB)
320GB HDD
ASUS P5NE-SLI MOBO
550W PSU
Xfi F4tality Sound Card (5.1)

Since then, i have upgraded to:

1 X 500GB HDD
1 X 1TB HDD
8 GB (2 x 2 x 2 x 2) Crucial XMS 2 667mhz RAM
GTX 260 GFX Card

And now, im sensing the need for an upgrade. Im going to be looking to treat myself to a semi gaming rig and need some advice on some new components as i have been out of the game for quite some time and BF3 is struggling a bit and i need to gear up for far Cry 3/ Hitman Absolutions and ....Crysis 3!!

My budget im hoping is for it to be about £500-£700 MAX!

Processor:

Now, it was between a 3570K or a 7770K processor. Since i'd be using it more for gaming and every day tasks (Sans Video editing), most people i have read on the forums says go for the i5 3570K, so my final choice unless proven wrong will be the 3570K i5

HDD:

Looking to get a 120GB SSD for OS and Application installs and i will have the 1TB for Music, Photos (Usual Stuff) and i have an external 1.5TB i will hold for information too.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, the place i am stuck at is Mobo, i WILL Overclock the i5 so people i have read favour the Z77 mobo, will that be a good choice?

About the PSU. Im a bit confused as i had help build my PC from my mate who knew a LOT. Im a bit baffled by when the motherboard says 8 + 4 pin etc. Could someone elaborate for me please? Also, what Wattage will i need too? I been looking at 800W ish.

For the housing, i think i may keep my original case but im not after something fancy. My front bit where my 2 external USB are has broken so a new case may serve me good.

Should i change my GFX? I thought my CPU would be bottle-necking with GTX260 so i may have been wrong. A lot of people like the AMD's nowadays although i have to admit i am a bit of a Nvidia Fan boy.

DDR3 Is new to me (I know i know n00b) but looking at the best value for money ram money could buy within my budget.

Thank you, and i apologise for my n00by questions as i have been far out of the game and also if i take time to reply, my boss is lurking around in the office :).

Thank you,
Michel

Lot of innacuracies in the original post but never mind :)

3570K, Z77, 8GB 12800C9, 660 / 7950, 128GB SSD, 550W PSU (unless yours is ok). Your drives need to be SATA.

That should run to £800. SSD may have to go if you want to spend the money elsewhere (GPU). It's an area where spending a little more can bring lots of gains.

Would allow for nice overclock

Is the 7950 that good? Heard a lot of people recommending it.

As i said sorry for the errors :)

Im sure i could ask for Xmas money instead of gifts...hmmm

im just going to look into the xigmatek case also mate. that cpu fan is 158mm tall not sure what max is for that case ont he below.

if you can get xmas money and stretch to £740 the top build + 7950 would be good

Hmmm.... May have to out stretch it.

I DO like the look of this one though:

Which Dunn2010 recommended!

Why si the PSU a worry?

500 watts is more than enough. pc power cooling psu are made by seasonic an excellent psu supplier.

its modular.

very good psu.

This is looking good also!

PSU As i worry about it and i know the least out of all components.

Will 550w future proof me for lets say i add more RAM + Extra GFX + i7 in the future?

Or would i be better off with a 800W. I am aware new components use less power now unlike back in the older days.

The PSU question,

550W is enough for most single GFX cards and that system.

The motherboard doesnt support SLI so you wont be adding another GFX card later, it does do Crossfire but at 16X/4X for the two slots, this isn't ideal so best left to single card setup.

SSD for quicker boot times/loading

Would probably go with the better GFX as an SSD can always be added later :)

Nice one :) !

With a case. The ones that come with a front bit for 2 X USB connections, how does a motherboard attach to them?

From what i can think, there's a wire that connect it to a controller on the mobo. The mobo doesn't actually have USB in the front, the controller does the work and integrates it into the USB available in the front of the case.

Correct? (If that makes sense).
