What is the most retarded thing you've seen in a corporation?

Sending a group of staff on a 5 day training course (on the other side of the country so that means hotel and travel expenses) ... for completely the wrong product; and insisting that they go on it. This is despite it being pointed out straight away when it was booked that (a) it was for completely the wrong product, (b) there was enough of a lead time before the course that the booking could have been cancelled without penalty, and (c) there was a course for the right product being held about 15 miles from the staffs base location at the same time (and was cheaper). Oh well, we helped the training company write their Linux course ...

Oh and I agree with the above mention of forcing Lean in everywhere ...

Anything to do with Idox?

No mate, its all to do with plans for building works. I won't mention the companies name. I personally think a sales man sold the idea but they couldn't be bothered to implement it or explain it to staff or the public.

Lmao. Lean is hilarious in LG.

Forcing old hatters to be "lean" without providing the underlying technological skills for them to do so. Place I contract presently, staff don't know how to use Word to a standard level...

One thing I notice in government is they don't learn from their mistakes. They use a supplier and get treated like ****, then they have the chance to change products and end up going back with said supplier knowing full well their crap support system and products :D.

MIND = BLOWN.

A private college I worked for in Cambridge decided to save money by not buying any more mobile phones. The problem was they did this in September, the start of the academic year when new staff started. This meant emergency out of hours contacts for 15-20 y/o students had no phones. The new IT director then thought that spending £3k on custom shirts for IT was worth the money. Mine was so big the sleeves were 6 inches longer than my hands and untucked covered my knees. The IT department collapsed shortly after that when 3-4 staff left at once because the guy was a complete muppet.

Let me just make it clear that I don't have a problem with LEAN principles and have seen it deliver great results. It just isn't a fix everything solution. And sometimes, something doesn't need fixing or industrialising. Because it works, and throwing money and time at "improving" it is futile.

It's not the philosophies fault it's the implementation and management mindset.

Especially when bonuses are based on savings.

The efficiency savings cannot be quantified by the NAO either.

Although I'm sure a 3C will solve the underlying issue!

I think LEAN/Pacesetter is certainly in the running at the moment. Unforunately Government will not listen to staff, and will instead continue to drive down logical input in persuit of dogma.

Millions have been spent on this. For something we can't even guage a success or not. I agree that it is implimentation, but problem being they are not learning leasons and we are nearly 8 years down the road. We only have one chance at it, really, can you try to do this twice? It's been an abject failure start to finish.

I found it offensive to be honest. Largely the presumption that any problems we solved previously without these 'tools' were not solved correctly, by inference. Such guff it is unbelievable, except that it comes from Westminster so I'm not that suprised really.

Anything done by your local Councils highways department.
Literally anything, whatever their hands touch will turn to poo.

(example #56362)
In every County in the UK there will be a five metre stretch of bicycle lane stuck somewhere, fully signposted, clearly marked up and completely frickin' useless to anyone.

I concur with this.

Near me there's a longish road, almost half of it needed resurfacing so 4 months ago resurfacing notices went up and work began, the twist being they resurfaced the only bit of the road that didn't need resurfacing, leaving the pothole infested, crumbling stretch alone.

When locals complained why they didn't do it the council stated that they couldn't afford to do the whole road

I see money book marked for core UK infrastructure projects spent on **** up's.

Booking various hotels around the country then adding it on to general project expenses. To make it even stupider they book them through contractors so they add there own 15% markup but I suppose it does stop the paper trail :(

Temporary traffic lights.

There is a local road which is on on steep cliff over a river and the side has washed away so it's only single lane.

The council has already bought the land many years ago in order to move it over.

After 20 years they still haven't done it and there has been tempory traffic lighs for that time at £20k per annum as the council doesn't have the money to move the road and they are not allowed to borrow the money. Estimated cost of road moving = £350k, cost so far of tempory triffic lights = £400k.

In fact,m last time I looked the longest temprory trafic lights was in Cambridge by a year but maybe we are winning now!

One near me is that the Council actually amended a bus stop sign that now reads Bus Stop no longer in use. This is not your standard run of the mill bus stop with shelter, this is one of them poles in the ground with a small metal board on. It would have been quicker to unscrew the sign and take it down. I mean seriously why bother taking the numbers off to replace them with no longer in use.

Do you live near Darlington by any chance?

Honestly too many to list, and most need an understanding of how my industry works. Most are down to the company's policy of bringing in people to target costs in one particular area, regardless of its impact on other areas. Eg reduce costs of the company car scheme by replacing insignias with astras. Great idea, except the standard kit for the job doesn't fit in an Astra so we now have to send two people to most jobs. Dude got a big fat bonus for reducing company car costs though

Tell me about it.... Happened with my place.... I was in a meeting way they said they were "giving them another chance".... about 30 people said "WTF!?!?!" basically... managers voiced there opinions that it was crazy to go with them again.. but they did it anyway. Cue the "oh we just got shafted again" face.

As developers suggesting some open source software... and management deciding they need to spend a million on a product none of us had heard of, and were forced into using.. that doesn't actually work properly.

Talking about 'Agile' for the past four years, but doing nothing about it let alone understanding it.

Training the testers up to be more qualified (outside of previous experience/education) than the developers....

Doing away with System Analysts....

Taking on projects that we all said could be done on two pieces of paper rather than 30 different screens, and us saying it would be a failure...... didn't listen... project flops after masses of expense.

Losing the investors in people award and then deciding it isn't that worthwhile anyway due to the latest set of company policies

Still running on Windows XP.... (and yes.. they even got Win 7 machines at EXTRA COST, and then ghosted them back to xp... lol quality.)

Interviews that having nothing to do with the job you are actually going for....

Being at least 10 years behind the curve with Java versions... and then 'upgrading' to 1.5 (although I snuck in 1.6 during a mass migration of code in a lot of places *sigh*.)

Lastly.. using IBM products.... they are the biggest bain of my life. RSA/RAD/Websphere can go and die in a ditch.

Large companies offshoring support and development and then not understanding why they aren't making any overall savings or why morale has taken a dive.
