Intel i7 - worthy upgrade?

3570K is better, for pure performance. As you should be getting a Z77 Motherboard too, it's Gen3 Compatibly should boost your 7870's performance.

The i7 2700K is on offer this weekend, and at that price it is hard to ignore.

But if you are not buying today I would go for the 3570K, the 2600K is not worth the extra if you are using it primarily just for gaming.

This. The offer expires tomorrow midday though!

Otherwise, the i5-3570K is a solid chip. Pointless getting an i7 since most games will hardly use the extra threads.

So do Z77 mobo's run intel i7's and i5's?

To be specific, a Z77 will run all the i7/i5/i3 2xx0's, and all the i7/i3/i5 3xx0's up to an including the 3770K (as will the Z68 but your better going for a Z77 these days). The i7 3820 and higher are socket 2011, the i7 9xx series are socket 1366 and the i7 8xx series are socket 1156.

I'm leaning more toward an i5 2500k.
Also would an i5/i7 run on a 500w psu?

As long as it's a good quality PSU, then yes. Also depends on how many graphic cards you plan to have in the system, but a good quality 500w PSU will be fine for a single GPU setup, even with a good overclock.

yes very worthy upgrade i went from a 955be clocked at 3.6 24/7 to a 3770k at 4.2 24/7 and the improvement in games is astonishing i think. i'm running crossfired 6970s and they always felt a bit held back by the 955 but now i've seen increase in most games especially the min frame rates which are close to 10-20 frames higher with intel.
