Yep, there's a dlink app and a web-browser interface. For external access you'll probably need to set up a dynamic DNS and do port forwarding on your router.

i looked into this a while ago and found this camera on ebay.

seems the idea i had is the same as the guy in the link.

the Mrs didnt like my idea of a DIY one so we ended up buying this instead

the cameras seem pretty similar though.

DIY is a much cheaper option.

Erm, just walk up the stairs and peek into the room and check on them? Or will that interupt your gaming/film watching/reading a book too much?

Baby monitors are a rip off. They are simply a placebo for over anxious parents.

Guess you jumped on your high horse and didn't bother to read he wants to see his kid from work.

OP - DIY a lot easier and cheaper.

i live in a 3 storey house with very creaky floors.

if im in the kitchen i can check on my little girl by looking at the monitor. if i walk up to her room and peek in the mix of floor boards and opening the door to her room is likely to disturb her) plus without turning a light on my eyes would need to adjust to the dark to be able to see her.

coupled with the fact she winges a lot during the night. i can peek at the monitor from bed to see if all is ok (ie blanket not over her head etc) without getting out and going to her room.

I'm going to go ahead and assume you don't have kids ;)

Does the DIY version have two way communication? Does it also measure the temperature of the room? I am sure some baby monitors even measure humidity of the room.

However for just general video conferencing, diy should be fine.

http://www.babymonitorsdirect.co.uk/ - They seem to have a good selection.

They provide good solutions with smart phones too.

What the hell would you want to measure the temperature of the room for and the humidity unless it was medically indicated?!?

Some people like to make sure the room temperature is adequate?

I don't have a child, but i have seen a lot of parents with thermometers in the cots.

I just thought it would be a useful thing to know?

Hi I had already asked them and they recommended 3 but all where for apple products

I will probably get the temperature monitor also with a sensor pad

My point stands - why the hell would you want to see your kid from work? What's the point?

Then you assume wrong - I've got three kids - 5yr old boy, 4yr boy and 2yr girl.

And no, I've never used any baby monitor.

Continue tip toing around and you'll have a baby/child that wakes at the drop of a pin. Just carry on with your normal day to day stff and they'll get used to it. I used to be able to do the hoovering without my kids waking up.

Yeah - another item trying to be sold to over anxious parents that's pointless.

God knows how all our parents managed to bring us up without all these gadgets without killing us in the process (and before some jumps on me stating babies used to die without these things - infant mortatlity rate isn't really any better since those gadgets became "trendy").

Thanks all. I'm going to be at work a lot so just wanting a good option will try diy option first

Take a photo and put it on your desk. Sleeping babies really aren't that interesting :-)
