20k a year mileage, £5k budget

My mistake, I'm confusing the two similar threads. I'd still not want a diesel S Line for <£5k, it's not going to be a pretty sight.

You're thinking of mine, I probably confused matters by chiming in!

The S line came along with the newer shape so they'd be 2.0 140/170 rather than 1.9 130. I know a few people with 2.0 TDI cars, while they seem a decent engine they all seem to have noisy turbos... Not sure if they're a weak point on those or just coincidence

Nah it was this one:

Here but the seller is a 0 feedback special.

My brother in law (always seems to be someone I know _ i'm the old and sensible one with a car that gets me to work and back, year after year :( ) has a black one and am sure it's S Line 130tdi. Think they put the 1.9s in for a few years after the shape changed, but not an expert on A4s.

You can get the revised front end with a 1.9 100 but not a 130+ as far as im aware - the 2 litre diesel isn't worth it, far better with the pre revised shape and a 130.

For the op I still think the accord would be a good buy - will fond one without a dpf but just new enough to avoid the initial issies they had. Nice comfortable cruiser too, or the 2.2 ford in a close to end of production year where the injectors were far less of an issue, look for one with a recently dmf/clutch and it should be a reasonable buy

Audi A4 S Line, sounds like a good option, viewed and test drove a few Estates of those before getting the Mondeo, if the Saloon version is priced similary to the Estates though it's going to be £6000-£6500 for a good example. May well up my budget slightly for one of these. I'm torn between the idea of a good all rounder such as the S Line or a cheaper commuter and a fun weekend car. Still debating the job anyway just wanting to look at my options in advance :)

What is it about the S-Line that 'sounds a good option'? Is it the rock hard suspension or the fact they cost disproportionately more than the rest of the range? You'll struggle to find one that isn't a shed for £5k.

Plus the only one you'd want in diesel format has the 140 tdi which, actually you definitely do not want!

The 115 1.9 might be bearable but there doesn't seem to be many in decent nick around

Golf mk IV GTi 150 diesel?

It's got the PD engine, which is pretty much bullet proof, mines on 125,000miles and only needs a bit of oil.

It's not great handling and is getting on a bit now but the engine is fun and zippy. Will do 44-50mpg.

I dont think any of the pre 2007 accords had dpf. The 2004 and early 2005 cdtis had a problem with the oil pumps(well the chain and guides). Which when goes takes the bottom end with it. This was revised on the late 05 onwards models. Otherwise they are a v nice car and imo look good still.
