*** Official Nintendo Wii U thread ***

So one developer says it has a horrible CPU, yet on another page we have a link to a story saying its faster than thought and is much faster than the current consoles.

Who knows what to believe so just ignore it and play the games.

Given that the CPU takes up only ~30mm2 and is built on 45nm tech it's safe to assume that it's fairly slow. It's probably quite a bit slower than the CPU in the PS360 consoles, especially the PS3.

I do,
They hated it when it came out and commented on how its all cores and no power.

We need to wait until at least May when PROPER games come out before commenting on how powerful it is really....

I know they said they didn't like coding for it but I genuinely can't recall anyone saying it was slow, just that the multiple cores and architecture were a real pain (especially for multi-platform ports).

I'm not knocking the Wii U for being underpowered since the Wii produced my 3 favourite games of the current (last?) generation and wasn't a powerful console. My main concern is that it could prevent developers from being able to full exploit the gameplay features that the gamepad could bring and lead to developers not putting the resources into Wii U development that Nintendo need if it's library of games isn't going to end up like the Wii (some gems swamped in a lot of rubbish).

As I said, its not slower just different.
Properly coded the CPU is pretty much equal to current gen - the increase in RAM and GPU makes it slightly more powerful then current gen, but weaker then next.

4A Games said:
"We had an early look at it, we thought we could probably do it, but in terms of the impact we would make on the overall quality of the game – potentially to its detriment – we just figured it wasn't worth pursuing at this time. It's something we might return to. I really couldn't make any promises, though."

"We had an initial look at the Wii U, but given the size of the team and compared to where we were last time, just developing for the Playstation 3 is a significant addition."

Translated: "Our publisher is about to sink, we don't have time to change our engine to compensate and make use of the less powerful CPU and more potent GPU combo as seen in the Wii U compared to the other two consoles. Developing the game for the Wii U with its different power ratio could be beneficial or detrimental for the game and we don't have the time or money to take the risk at the moment. We may however look into it again at a later date assuming we can find a new publisher."

No one remember Valve and Gave in particular ripping Sony a new one saying the PS3 was a disaster and they should just recall it and make a do over and apologise to the whole world for wasting their time? yet here we are a couple of years later and they are best buds, and we even have Steam on the PS3 along with Portal 2 and CS:GO. Gabe even thanked Sony for making the most open console and that Portal 2 for the PS3 was the best port of the game.

Basically, opinions are fickle, take them with some salt :p

Who cares how powerful the Wii U is? Who cares how powerful any of the next gen or current gen consoles are? I play games to enjoy playing games. Clock speeds and amounts of memory are irrelevant. Why can't people just enjoy games for what they are? Graphics have become the be all and end all of gaming and it is turning a lot of gamers away.
I'm getting a Wii U and I will enjoy playing Nintendo exclusive games on it, because they are interesting and different titles with interesting game play. I will get the new xbox when it comes out, and it will no doubt be a lot more powerful than the Wii U, but what do people expect to be different just because it has a lot more power? Better graphics are a given, but they are not, and shouldn't be, the be all and end all.

My two-cents.

I think some people's main gripes with low-end hardware is that it can often severely reduce the capabilities of games - some great ideas can get hampered when lack of hardware power gets in the way.

Quoted for truth. I'm glad the Wii U will have different games to the next consoles as like with the Wii (for me at least) it complements the main console. If developers just make multiplatform games it will not be the console of choice when deciding which one to buy it on. I want unique games even if they don't look photo realistic. The other two will be for that!

Nintendo have shown it's not all about power and I personally can't wait for their iconic series of games to make the transition as I expect them to be bigger and look better as a nice bonus too.

Yeah that title is a bit irresponsible, Sometimes eurogamer just title articles like the Sun do....

everyone youre doing a console launch wrong...
wait until theres games out that push the hardware before spouting stuff out.
This was always going to happen with a new ninty console, The idiot fanboy developers chirp in and say " OH look publicity, WiiU is ****, how controversial of me to say this..."
ok, so basically you cant code?
As bad as Gabe newell with his Windows 8 comment that never quite made sense.
If windows 8 is bad for gaming, so is Windows 7 gabe....

If during the Wii U life cycle we get a good mario/zelda/metroid (prime esq.)/paper mario series of games, it will have been worth the cost of the console.

Ohhhhh I didnt think about the gamepad with metriod.

That could be pretty sweet.

It would be awesome if there was a game where you can use it as your PDA/phone in that game?

No More Heroes did that in quite a cool way, but it didn't sell that well so who knows if they'll do anything similar.

sigh :o been reading a lot of forums and game sites since the wii u launch, got to love nintendo fanboys and im sure nintendo do lol,i find it amazing that people would buy a console only for a few exclusives but hey if you have money to burn lol.im personally going to keep my money and see what happens with the next microsoft and sony offerings.

Aside from all the teething problems the console is having there are many more reasons why it will fail for example-

no one but the loyalist fans will stick with it once we get solid facts about the real next gen consoles at e3 and the nintendo conferance will show a new zelda game where you will be able to blow into mic and mimic a flute.

parents wont buy one for there kids as they will fight over who has the cheap tablet controller

which in turn wont last long before it breaks and will cost a fortune to replace

3rd party developers wont give a crap about wii u,it will be too much hard work for little gain and are most likley working on the next xbox or ps games while churning out current gen to millions of customers

and when the only reason to buy one is to play mario , zelda and use the tablet/controller

the current gen with a huge library of games is cheaper with way more storage available

you can pick up a xbox 360 with 250bg and three games for cheaper than the base 4gb wii u

awesome games already out and announced gta v, farcry 3 (scored 10/10 on eurogamer)

that being said i heard the wii u has a good browser :D but still not as good as the browser on my mobile phone or ipad

less than ten days from a console launch which has launched at the best time of year (potential sales wise) but is still widely available for pre order and will not sell out

some of you might call me names in defence like troll/fanboy etc but this is just my opinion ive been stung in the past buying a console at launch and seeing it fail to live up to the hype or in the case of dreamcast get the support it deserved.

make up your own minds buy it dont buy it it dosnt bother me  just show me one other console launch that had as much negativity and with no hype what so ever

peace ;)

Wii U is an amazing secondary console imo. I'm only interested in the usual Ninty franchises so don't give a toss about third party. Will have next gen PS for the other stuff.

To be fair, the nintendo 1st party offerings are good enough to warrant buying a nintendo console. And then you have the likes of Monster Hunter etc, which just looks awesome. Really hoping they make a Pokémon game for the Wii U, could be awesome.

More comments from developers...

I think people will get bored of it in the next 2-3 months and that will be that. Seems that no ones is bothering to develop for this and I can't blame them. Most of the game developers are already playing with the new 'PS4' dev kit and that's where the money's at.
