Hi all

am looking at buying a new laptop, preferably the VAIO Z from zony, but I just find it very hard to click the buy button on the laptop with 512GB ssd which sony price at £1150 just for the ssd option alone not not including the rest of the system lol(this is the price of a whole new laptop). If i dont get the power media dock then I can get the 512GB, if i get the power media dock then I can only get 256GB.

256GB option is only £205 right now on special offer, before it goes back up to £400

Its not a budget issue, i could get the whole lot, but something just keeps bugging me, like getting ripped off by sony stupid pricing that seems to only apply in Uk minus Ireland. In Ireland sony site its only 800Euros and in German site its only 600ero, France 900euro. Why we in Uk always get ripped off?

The problem is that this vaio z has proprietary SSD, meaning that I cant upgrade them once they are in.

so what would you do? buy power media dock and go 256gb and save almost £700 or just get 512GB and forget the power mida dock save £500 over the price of ordering both together???

How long does 256 last generally these days? I dont want to get a laptop and get stuck with it not having enough space issues.

I hate decisions like this, OcUk to the rescue lol

£1000 for storage seems just ridiculous if you ask me. If storage is an issue I would be looking elsewhere for a laptop that a) takes a standard SSD b) has 2 HDD storage bays for SSD+large HDD love.

256 GB is more than enough for OS + a load of games. What do you want to store on the machine? Is an external USB HDD not an option?

Anything proprietry will be tough to ever get a replacement for.
256 will do you well, it is lots of space, unless you must have your entire steam folder installed at once.
Its over 350 full length movies.
Just make sure that is the brand and model that you want, and waiting for it to go EOL might spark further reductions, or conversely, zero availability.

Hi guys

thanks for the input, yeah Sony are being stupid with the price lol

I am not ever going to be using this for Movies, or any media creating, this will be production only laptop.

It will be only for programming but I do need to install things like Microsoft visual studio,Ms office and quite a few statistical packages, database software like Q and have few books on pdf that I want to add on there including the MSDN library and 2 games at best.

I have only two options now, as getting everything is rip-off.

1) is get power media dock and 256gb option ~ £2300

or

2) No power media dock but get 512gb ssd ~£2800

dam choices, common sense says option 1.

thanks for the input guys

I think it's a no brainer for option 1, although with that budget I would be looking elsewhere! :)

You can always add more USB HHD storage

Wasn't that a hoax? Well, bad info at least!

I can't see why it would be a hoax, and it makes sense as ultrabooks cannibalise it's sales. I know it's a different class (not using ULV CPUs) to an ultrabook but I can't imagine sales were too strong before and probably a lot less strong since the retina macbook pros have rolled out.

speaking to sony staff regarding the EOL I have been told that it is just rumours and that it will stay around till march until the a new refresh. I don't know who is right, but this is what sony assured me on anyway. What is going away soon is the anniversary edition model.

Its a great piece of kit, but sony get the price wrong, not for the design but for ridiculous components like £1200 for just 512GB option ssd(OK although it is raid of two 256gb) its just out of this world stupid. Apparently its a deliberate hike by stupid uk managers, as in germany it comes its only about 600euros.

With pricing like that I would not expect them to sell much if anything

Have you considered buying from Europe then? It's not like you'll have to pay tax on it either.

Also 256GB is enough if it isn't going to be your main PC, you can always add a portable HDD which will give you more GB/£ anyway. I have 256 in my laptop and I only keep ~30GB of music on it + some films/series that I'm watching at the moment, all the photos and videos I work on get moved to an external one once I'm done with them.

@GTRacer

Yeah considered getting this from europe, specifically Germany. But i don't think the wireless wan module would work in England and the warranty will only be viable worldwide for only the first year and then I would have to go back to Germany for any repairs.

another issue is that Sony is a franchise and their foreight sites only accept a credict card and address that si registered in the country and sit it is being bought from, ie from Germany i need German address and credit card to order from the German site, very strange I think they are telling be lies lol

This wont be my main pc at all, this is only for programming and battle feild 2 and that's it, nothing else.

IMO, that vaio z is a ripoff, you could get a more powerful clevo laptop for half the price!

there are plenty of other brands out there if you don't want something like a clevo, and most brands are cheaper than sony too! personally, if I was going for one of the bigger brands, I'd go for a lenovo.
