Hi guys,

Thinking about buying a new card for my rig as i just bought a whole new rig with this 27" ips monitor but kept my 6870 graphics card. It actually seems to be running my current games like dota 2 and ssf4 fine however i would like to futureproof it a little whilst i have the cash.

Which card is better for this res, the 7950 or the 670? I see a lot of recommendations for the ati due to how much cheaper it ca be had for, but is the gtx a better performing card at my res? It was on the benchmarks i looked at on anand but thats only one set of benchmarks.

Just looking for the most futureproof of the two cards and preferably one that doesnt wake the neighbours.

Thanks :)

Out of those two cards the 7950 all day...with that res your playing at i would want the 3gb of vram. On my monitor at 1920x1080p i see vram usuage of 1800 in bf3 :O. so yes at your resoultion i would consider the 7950 by a long shot.

Nothing is really futureproof these days as anything is around the corner...but your best bet still is the 7950 over the 670.

I'm running a dual monitor setup - 1440p & 1080p - on a single 680, it copes really well with the games that I play. The 670 is a good card and will run everything well, but I have to agree that 7950 is probably the better card to get, if only for the extra VRAM.

The 7950 is the better choice purely because of value for performance and nothing at all to do with VRAM. I quite happily play all my games @5760*1080 with no issues of VRAM.

Gigabyte WF 7950 is a fantastic card. Make sure you are happy that the games you play/want to play are not PhysX titles. Not that it matters that much but with AMD cards, you will be missing out on the pretties :)

Definition of future-proofing is usability and not about having something that will not be superseded.

I future-proofed myself from needing to upgrade my gfx cards sooner by getting the 2GB per GPU versions, if not i would have had to upgrade a year ago.

Totally agree the 670 will handle it just fine just like the 7950 will as well. But considering the price difference and the extra 1gb vram its a no brainer really as he did mention more future proof. But yes both are great cards that will handle that setup just fine.

The gigabytes 7950 is priced so high you may as well get a 7970. How are the msi twin frozr regarded as there is one on week only deals for 80 quid less than the gigabyte.

Scratch that just looked again and the gigabyte showing a more reasonable price now. Was deep showing a lot higher a bit ago I had it filtered to 7950 lol.

Quite a few options on TWO. sapphire one seems to have a good clock on it?

the 7950's have slightly gone up compared to me buying the msi for £240 just over 2 weeks ago.

Be warned with the msi 7950's as there were a faulty batch going around with high temps [ dont know if that batch has been resolved]. However, i was lucky enough to pick up a non fualty one and its very cool.

Just relised they put the msi back on sale for this week.

I only recommend cards that have good warranties and sapphire isn't one of them. MSI 7950s have had lots of problems, so this leaves Gigabyte.

Is it loud?

The extra VRAM on the 7950 makes no difference as you'll hit the GPU wall before the VRAM wall.

Your situation is slightly different Final8y as you have 4 GPU's and as such have the GPU grunt to utilise the extra VRAM.

That said, the 7950 is cheaper and faster at that resolution. No brainer.

It was just an example to explain the term and definition as the GPU wall is very likely with a single 7950 which was not the point to what i was replying to as it was not about whether it makes a difference in this case.

Hmm MSI is tempting as could sell the 6 games to bring cost even further down. But i just read through that whole thread about the heat issues and after having to send my faulty psu back i really dont wanna mess about with the card too so its a bit of a gamble.

Gigabyte looks decent but dont 3 smaller fans = more noise?
