As a result of my 4 and half year old 40GB PS3 giving me the YLoD, I'm now looking around for a replacement. Still got to get the old one running again so I can get my data off it, but that's going to have to wait a few more weeks.

My first thought was to try to find a looked-after second-hand 160GB Slim, but I saw today at work (Sainsbury's) that the new 12GB one is going down to £138.99 this Friday. With discounts, I can get it for about £120, then use the HDD out of my old PS3. I'm not a huge fan of the new ones really, mainly because of the top-loading drive, but £120 is rather cheap for a brand-new one. Anyone got one/used one of the new super-slim models and have any opinions? Worth £120 or should I just get a 160GB slim?

I bought the Super Slim, the top loading drive isn't an issue for me. However, the console is loud due to it, considerably a lot more then the Slim I had.

I also had an issue where I got the message that my console was over-heating, and it turned it's self off. It being a brand new machine and within 5 days of ownership made me scratch my head. I did the full fan test where the fans blew on for a minute or so and it seemed to fix the problem.

It's not a bad console, however it does feel very cheap, but the size is a plus. That's the only thing going for it in my opinion.

I dislike the corrugated card feel at the top and wish they had left it a smooth matt black.

It does what I want it to do, and again, the size is a bonus for me so I'm happy overall.

Personally I would go for the cheapest option, also I'd want a brand new console over a second hand one, purely for the benefit of having a proper warranty and the peace of mind knowing it hasn't been thrashed. For me the best option would be buying the super slim for £120 and sticking your old hard drive in it. Buying second hand you'd be relying on the seller to be honest with you and if it was me I probably wouldn't trust them. :p

I'll just go with the cheapest/best overall option if/when my fat PS3 dies. I could really do with a bigger HDD than the 250gb I have in this one but don't have the heart to spend £50 on the old bugger so I might see if there's a 500gb deal/bundle at the time. Saying that, if there was a 320gb slim for more than a few £ cheaper I'd probably just get that.

This is the thing, the new slim seems to work out cheaper than the 160GB Slims I've seen on MM, so unless another looked-after one appears on there soon, I might just have to go with the 12GB new one. Not my first choice, the new one looks a bit tacky and I really don't like that top-loading disc drive, but if it's cheaper it seems silly to pay more for an older console.

Bah, I wish my old PS3 could have just lived forever. My PS2 is 11 years old this Christmas and it still runs!

How does the 12gb cope with mandatory installs? My GTA5 install is 15 or 17gb and I have no DLC. I think the Xbox gets away with it because you don't have to install games. I think the closest it comes to that is on Halo Reach? You have to install some of the MP maps or something like that. Personally, I wouldn't bother with a 2nd hand one unless it was really cheap or it had quite a few games that I actually wanted.

a quick search and I've found: Sony Playstation 3 500GB Super Slim Console w/ Amazing Spiderman Movie (PS3)

IN STOCK 97

£189.99 / £158.33 ex vat

also on a side note, If you put your HDD in the new console, you will have to format it and start again anyway

One of my friends just changed his old 60GB to a 500GB and he prefers the new one, its not as lound as his fat runs cooler and uses less power. He never had a slim though he cant compare between the slims though. A highstreet music store has 500Gb PS3 with CODBlops2, Uncharted 3 and GT5 Acadmey for £259, think instore you have a selection of games to chose from inc Fifa 13.

Im in a similar situation where I got a bought a 320Gb Slim that ended up being faulty and now stuck with either a refund or replacement with the 500Gb Super Slim.

Im very tempted just to get the refund and buy a replacement BD drive for my old 120Gb Slim (and probably upgrade the HDD too) - its 3 years old but I know its been looked after. As my PS3 sits on a shelf over my monitor I can imagine the Super Slim being loud enough to be heard easily (only sit about a metre away), which is why Im put off it...

That's about £130 more than the 12GB will cost me. :p No need for a big HDD anyway, I can use my old one once I've recovered my data from it.

The main thing stopping me is that I'll be going from the solid, well built PS3 I have now, to the cheap, ugly budget model. Obviously functionality is the same, but I'd hate to buy it and end up hating it being sat on my TV unit.

I bought the 12GB the other day, mainly as I don't already have a PS3 and partly as I needed a Blu Ray player. Due to a pricing error I got the console and Wonderbook starter pack for £120 - the game and accessories are currently on eBay and up to £30, so the console has cost me less than £100 overall!

The drive is a little noisy but with the sound up on games/films it doesn't even really register, and the unit fits neatly on top of the Xbox. One bugbear I have is that the 12GB version has the memory built in. I have a 320GB laptop drive ready to install but once you do the internal memory becomes useless. Also, the console doesn't come with the mounting cage for the HD. You have to buy it separately for the extortionate price of £10. It's literally a piece of metal with five screws!

Well just to add a spanner to the works, I've just heard Morrisons have the 160GB Slim (the original one) for £150. Question is, is it worth £30 more to me to have a slim over a super-slim? I don't know. :(

Well... the slim is quieter and better looking, plus I love a good slot loader so I'd go with the slim, my 160GB model is virtually silent. The super slim looks pretty horrible, especially the top which looks cheap and nasty, I'd say it's worth the £30 more.

Where did you hear that? Seems luck if youll find one in store - I rang around a few stores as they dont have a proper online presence and had zero luck.

Also quite a few stores stock games but not consoles, so double check before you go down. I cba to go all the way to MK to find out :(. Took 3 lengthy periods of hold just for them to realise they sell PS3s :/

Ive pretty much decided to get my Slim fixed with a new BD and HDD (gonna move my MBP one into it) - thats how much Im trying to avoid the Super Slim :p

I phoned my local one earlier and they confirmed they had one left.

It's tempting, but an extra £30 seems a lot to pay when they fundamentally do the same thing. Plus I'm moving house in a few weeks so I'm trying to avoid as much unnecessary expense as I can!

Personally I'd go with the super-slim, though aesthetics are down to the individual but as far as I'm concerned, the best looking is the original fat models, the slim just looks terrible.

So I'm saying save the £30 and go with the super slim.

I'd go with one my self seeing as my 60gb fat is on it's way out, plus I'd made the mistake of buying it pre-owned, went through 3 replacements in the one month as well as sending the current one away for repairs (4 YLoD's in the same month :\), but I think I'm gonna wait and see if the PS4 rumours are true. £120 is a really good price though! Getting someone a 3DS for Christmas and that's gonna be £130 by the looks of it, for the purpose of comparison.

Went with a 160GB Slim from Morrison's in the end, although it took a lot of effort to get them to actually go and find the damn thing. Set it up earlier, but not the most promising of starts so far. Been getting an intermittent black screen for a second or two every now and again, a quick google suggests it's to do with a specific video setting so I've changed that. It's also locked up on the XMB once already. Rule of threes applies here, if it shows another sign of any problems it's going straight back.

It's very quiet on idle compared to my old one, although with a disc in the drive it gets noticeably noisier, though I can't tell if it's noisier overall than my old one or if it's just more noticeable because it's so quiet when the disc isn't spinning.

Also a little disappointed that Sony have removed the illuminated buttons from the earlier slim models, as well as the blue disc LED. Strange decision.

Just out of interest! Does your slim's hard drive make a lot of clunking noises and also sound like it is powering down?

I just this minute fired up a brand new 320gb slim. Suddenly noticed the hard drive making odd noises. Have not gone very far with setting up much and not even tried a game yet, but I do know one thing and that is my sons 11month old 320gb slim does make these noises. Obviously the BD Drive makes a racket and im expecting that on mine. But the hard drive does not sound good too me!

It doesn't mate, it's very quiet. I had the 160GB slim (the one mentioned in my last post) but I've now got a 320GB one I bought from the MM on here a few days ago, didn't notice the HDD in the 160GB one to be particularly noisy and the 320GB one is quiet too.

I do prefer the look of the 320GB one overall though, it looks a bit nicer than the newer version without the illuminated buttons etc.
