Just arrived in Bangkok for three nights and staying in Le Fenix hotel just outside the centre. We are going to get prices today for a trip to the floating market tiger temple and to the river Kwai, is there anything else I should make sure I do?
I wouldn't bother with the Palace, it's around 450 baht each to get in (and you have to hire clothes if your shoulders, knees, clevage, or shorts aren't long enough). Opposite though is Wat Pho (pronounced What Po). Where the reclining Buddah is, it's well worth a look. 100 baht (£2) to get in and includes a bottle of water. If you're around that area watch out for pick pockets and people who try to distract you. When around by the palace people (not Thai's) will come up and say... Where you going? The Palace? You might as well wait an hour, it's closed for a religious Thai ceremony. Why not go over on a boat ride. They'll be patting your arms etc whilst talking to you. They are either a) trying to rob you, or b) trying to get you to go on an overly expensive boat ride. When you get near the palace you'll hear a tannoy which repeats every minute saying "do not talk to people who are trying to dsitract you, the palace is always open..."
The boat rides are expensive, but if you go up a pier and get the standard boat (the ones which the Thais use to commute to work) you'll save about £15 at least.
We stayed in Sukhumvit in bangkok, there's a place called "Bed Supperclub" which is AMAZING. The food is out of this world. This is in Sukhumvit 11. Expect to pay 1300-1400 baht for 4 courses.
At Sukhumvit 15 you have a restaurant called Cabbages and Condoms, this is also amazing (just not as nice as bed), and it'll cost you a fair bit less and there's a huge choice of food. It's a charity based restaurant (hence the name). The person who set it up says that condoms should be made readily available as cabbages in the third world, hence the name. It's about half way down Sukhumvit 15, so don't worry about going down the road if you go, as it looks as though you're going no where, it's on the right.
use the BTS to get around, it's super easy, they run every 1-2 minutes and it's very hard to go wrong.
If you're there on Saturday, check out Jatujak market (BTS to Mo Chit, get off, cross the huge park and it's the biggest market you'll see). It's not even filled with the same stuff, it's amazing. Make sure you get a map (it's free) as you will get lost, it's that big.
Where you going after Bangkok? I came back just under two weeks ago, went for 3 weeks in Thailand with the wife for our honeymoon
