Hi there i've found a relatively cheap PC on ebay and i've got a choice of 2 for my budget, am i open to suggestions? No. I have a budget and am sticking to the 2 i have found, what i wanted to know is which of the two processors would be more efficient for gaming currently? The fx4170 or the phenom 965?

Here are the other specs

750 WATT POWER SUPPLY (unsure on the brand)
8GB DDR3 1600MHZ " "
GIGABYTE 78LMT-USB3
ATI HD 7770 1GB

Thanks for any help you give me :).

a lot of those Ebay stores do offer warranty, and can be legitimate businesses, but that doesn't mean I'd buy from them due to the low quality parts.

It has a warranty, and also the reason im not open to suggestions is because everytime i've been on one of these forums to get my answer i get given a huge list of items outside my price range or a list of items to 'build one' which is not what im asking, i appreciate any help given and i agree it may be 'foolish' but on this one occasion i would just like my answer, i will link you the PC, if you think you can find me a better one for the same price anywhere then i would be very grateful, but i have done a lot of searching i can assure you :).

Thanks.

It's okay I guess, I'd go for the cheaper of the two if I was set on buying either of the two, but it's far from the best solution.
There will be literally no difference between the 4170 and the 965 with a 7770.

If they're the same price, flip a coin.

Thanks Martini, could you explain to me why there would be no difference just for future reference? I thought the 7770 was a fairly good gpu for a mid-high gaming?

Because I've built better systems a year ago at the same price point.
I know GPU price/performance has pretty much stagnated in that time, but there's still a plethora of GPU's available.

On OCUK previously there were 7850's for 120 quid with games that offset the cost of the card to 95 quid, that's 7770 price.

The 7770 is fine for mid range gaming, but it's a lesser card than the 6850 is and the 6850's could be had cheaper (The 6850 being my mid range GPU of choice when I was building systems at this price point)

The CPU's will both be able to push the 7770, even though with a higher end GPU there may be a difference between the 2 CPU's, at this level of GPU performance you wouldn't see anything between them.

Think you'd honestly be best off finding a base system for 240ish and then throwing a 140 quid DC 7850 1GB in it, the games with the 7850 offset the price difference and even this isn't the best solution, but it's a better one.

Windows might not come with the PC - so I would check. OTH,you can still get Windows 8 cheap ATM.

The PSU probably would be worth replacing down the line though as I suspect it won't be a good one.

Here are some reviews of the FX4170:

Looking at the comparisons with the Phenom II X4 955 and 980,in many cases the FX4170 is faster. However, for some reason DiRT3 runs relatively poorly on Bulldozer based CPUs(not on Piledriver based ones).

The first review uses an HD7970,the second a GTX285 and the last a pre-overclocked GTX580.

I have a copy of windows 7 ready for a purchase :). Also i thought as much with the PSU so i have put aside some spare ££ as a friend has a few boxed PSU's available for me at reduced price.
