hi guys

need a lil bit of advice please

buying my first car finally. im very lucky as i can get on a friends business policy allowing me any car i like, plus my town is the worst in the UK for insurance!

  • im 24 so dont really need a banger
  • got around £1.5k to spend, can up this to £2k max if I can get something much better
  • Want something very good on fuel, hoping for 50mpg? if not atleast 40mpg. most of my driving is going to be done around town
  • looking for something small or small-ish
  • and it has to be reliable/have a good engine
  • IF i can get something nippy but good on fuel too that would be awesome but i dont think they both go together (i dont know much about cars)

i think them are all the main points

edit: i have been told to look for a toyota corolla or a honda civic

thank you in advance

Focus.

As well.. with Insurance make sure you read the fine print. Most 'Business' type insurances are very specific on who drives a car under the policy. Normally you have to be employed and is restrictive on say Named Driver +Spouse. At least that's the way my Dads seems to work.

thanks for the reply, havent considered the focus and i dont mind how they look tbh

im hoping there arent any specifics like them as its the only way im ever gonna afford to have a car. insurance around here will cost me over £2k as a 2nd driver on an old 02 plate corsa and im 24 lol

That's car insurance for you though dude. Make sure you look into it because the last thing you will want is to get caught for driving with No Insurance as that will knock your premiums a hell of a lot more!

hmm, will defo go through the fineprint then

what year and type of focus should i be looking for?

I would say a petrol one! Will it do 50mpg I doubt it but for less than £2k I'd sleep easier knowing it wasn't a diesel. :p

Or if it has to be diesel maybe something like a VW bora? Probably not as high on insurance as that corsa. :o

thanks for the reply

but insurance isnt an issue as i can get any car i want

the bora is a little too big lol, need something a bit small

A 10 year old Bora for £2700? Is the boot full of gold bars, I imagine it must be as it's very low at the back.

Could quite easily turn it back to stock wheels and sell the BBS etc. Probably make some money back.

Possibly, but Boras are hard enough to shift without making them look like they're scraping the road. A 2.5k car it is not

To balance the harshness up, if those are real CH's they are worth a fair bit

They are real. And look at it, its hardly a £1k car is it...much better than a £1k mondeo, at least imo.

Will you build no claims on that policy? If not then I'd suggest getting a banger and your own policy - long term the only way you'll reduce your premiums is by building no claims.

It's worth not a lot more than £1k, probably close to £1.5 max imo - boras are ten a penny and they are not easy to sell, what makes you think its worth more than any other one out there? I don't see how it's any more appealing than the equivalent mondeo (or less, that wasn't my point), the wheels and drop instantly make it even more difficult to shift, it's also in one of the worst colours. Irrelevant anyway but whoever is selling that is dreaming

Ten a penny? There is like 30 listed on pistonheads....

It's not my car, I haven't 'valued' it at 2700, I just put what the guy is selling it for.
