Winter 2012-2013 ( UK )

Another couple of days like this and I may even close my balcony windows at night. Benefit of living in a more 'upmarket' group of flats, the old bids who live around me always having their heating set to kill so I have a heated floor and permanent 15c even though I haven't turned my heating on in 2 years and have my balcony doors open 9 months of the year.

Doesn't help on the walk into work though :(

I'm predicting a cold one, definitely. Less mild than last winter.

Wonder how many "I'm a student and instead of spending money on heating I'm going to buy beer!" posts there will be. Yeah, wait till January.

Last winter was stupidly warm. I was expecting super-duper climbing conditions (rock climbing is better when the rock is cold, you get better friction), yet I didn't have a single climbing day when I didn't climb in t-shirt and shorts.

This winter, I am hoping for colder conditions.

Looking forward to receiving the increased heating bills though! Not...

I think long and colder than normal.

Piers Corbin tends to have accurate long term weather predictions, but I can't find his forecast for this winter yet.

It wasn't stupidly warm for winter here in the south east, reason i know that is because i was shivering so much and had to keep the heating on for ages!. Plus we had the snow on the ground for days and we had events cancelled on us.

Here at least i think it's going to be a bad one. We got off extremely lightly last year. The summer (if you can call it that) we have just had was a very similar one to 2010 and that winter was really bad. We had over 4 feet of snow at one point. The heating has been on the odd day in July and August, and been on just about every day since mid-late September. Also similar to 2010. We had snow on the ground in mid October which is very early even for us. Two weeks ago, on the Wednesday (17th) it did'nt go above zero until after one in the afternoon. So yes, i think this is going to be a particularly bad winter.

I've bought myself a load of thermals and gloves and stuff and prepared for a good cold winter.

The chances of a freak November heat wave have just gone through the roof.

Hopefully it's a good winter, it does put a downer on going home for xmas and leaving amazing snow behind in Prague just to have miserable rain in the UK. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a white xmas :)

It makes me laugh too, the main problem people back home complain about when it snows or gets icy is driving yet the solution is beyond simple, fit winter tyres :)

The metOffice long term prediction models have come back with another indication it could be a very cold winter again this time around, according to the express.

Personally i'm waiting on a blog that analyzes all the current models and bases their bias towards what the majority think will happen, combined with any particularly strong indicators, due tomorrow.

The main indicator that it discusses is the shutting down of the arctic cyclones that drive the wind patterns around our end of the northern hemisphere, indicated by a warming of the stratosphere .. I didn't understand it fully because some of it is pretty complicated, but basically if the wind shuts down enough, we get a large blocking high pressure develop and extend from the arctic and scandinavian region which brings lots of cold weather. We already had a bit of one this weekend, and I think the short term weather indicates another drop in temps the end of this week.

If the blocking patterns continue to develop and remain for any longer than a few days, then yes, it could get pretty cold. HOWEVER we can't actually predict if that will happen enough and at the right times to make snow blizzards.

It certainly seems like this winter has the potential to get very cold in the UK, time to fit the fatties on my bike and unpack the sledge again :D

Heres the sauce im referring to: http://ukweather.wordpress.com/winter-201213/

wow could this really come off?, there are signs now starting to appear that winter is going to hit hard, getting colder as from next week. Some are saying that we could well be heading towards another 2010, with a lot of snow and people stuck at home!.
