iPhone 5 battery life

I honestly don't understand where the reviewers get their figures from.

Whatever I disable or do, I cannot get anywhere near it. I find it hard to believe it's a duff battery. Why would it be?

Thought being their flagship model (64GB) these things ought to be rare, but doesn't seem to be the case looking at the huge thread on various apple forums.

I also had to reset all my settings, then manually configure each relevant one and I found it helped with my battery life.

Well mine was 100% at about 4am when I took it off charge, it's now sitting at 4% at 19:07 with the following stats:
Usage: 6 Hours, 30 Minutes
Standby: 14Hours, 35 Minutes

My battery seems to be like my iPhone 4S... perhaps even worse :( Really hope they start researching into more dependable batteries soon!

Apple have no information on exactly how battery life is tested, though of course, it will be in a controlled environment, with the possibility of a 3G booster being located near the device (I say possibility, but to be honest, this is likely to be almost guaranteed).

Problem is that one person's battery life times will not reflect yours at all. Those that are getting 2 days will not use their phone the way that I do, for example. Simple as that.

Won't be a duff battery either. There is basically no such thing (of course, there are some, but those that are constantly swapping their devices are doing so for no reason - software is more than likely going to be the culprit).

That's just it, a case of stick or twist.

I don't have any chips on the edge, no camera issues etc so I would be running the risk of having those effect me on the premise of "maybe" getting a better battery.

This morning, I had about 45 minutes of usage over WIFI and it only dropped to 99%.

That kind of cheered me up, confirmed my suspicions that a low signal hammers these more than other devices. Thats ok though, just good to know.

Ordered a Vodafone sim on a cheapo £10 a month deal via Carphone Warehouse. 300 mins, unlimited texts and 500mb data. That will do me for work. Ill just throw my usual sim in during the evening.

i'll test mine properly at work tomorrow.

With my 4 i had it on 3g all day (12 1/2 shift) and by the time i come home it's on roughly 30 - 40% battery life. This includes the odd internet search etc

If the 5 comes close to this i'll be happy

I used WIFI for an hour last night, with various apps and steam running in the background. Usage read 1 hr 27 mins and I had 88% battery.

That is actually superb, to have an LCD on for that long and have that battery remain.

This pretty much confirms that the issue I had was down to poor signal.

well i've been at work all day (12 1/2 shift) and my phone has been active since 5:30am.

i've had 3g on all day and done a bit of surfing etc plus playing games and videos in my spare time.battery is currently set at 22%.
my usage is:
Usage - 4hrs 34mins
Standby 17hrs 13mins

to me thats pretty dam good :)
how are others finding their battery

About what I find. Roughly 5-6 hours on 3G.

With WIFI all day it looked like I could hit 7 or 8.

Can't grumble at that really. It's acceptable.

My 5 is my first ever iPhone and I've only had it since Friday, so I'm still at that 'kid gloves' stage where I'm getting it set up how I want it, installing new apps, tweaking settings etc. At the moment, I'm not paying much attention to the usage/standby figures as I'm keeping it topped off - if I'm out and about it gets put back on charge when I get home. The lowest it got down to at one point was 60% after a bit of a gaming session.

I'm also manually putting it into Airplane mode at bedtime and as a result it only loses around 1% overnight if any.

WiFi is staying on all the time, which is a revelation as my previous Android phone sucked battery if I did that, and I've pruned Notifications down to the stuff that actually matters and I must admit, for such a powerful device, my perception of the battery life has been a lot better than I'd expected. One of these days I'll leave it alone so I can get some sort of measure of my real world usage!

The battery life is certainly superior compared to Android.

With the poor signal at work my GS3 average around 3hrs screen time.

This is around 5 to 6 in the same conditions, and if im purely using WIFI for the day I could get over 7-8hrs.

There isn't an Android handset that could do that. Can the Razor Maxx even get 8 hours usage over wifi?

A Galaxy Note 2 does ~5 hours on auto brightness and no tweaks, it's possible to get a absolute max of 10 hours if the handset is tweaked to the max. How are you measuring the iPhone 5 screen on time since you would have to manually time it as the "usage" statistic is not screen on time it's whenever the phone is out of sleep.

I can't give exact stats but with my iPhone 4 I used to keep it plugged in over night, wake up for work 6am then around 7-8pm i'd have to change settings and use it carefully so not to kill it.

With my iPhone 5 I can do the same but carry on using it throughout the day as I normally would. I could go to sleep without charging it and have around 20% battery left the next morning.

I typically get 6-8 hours "usage" with 2-3 days on standby.

"Usage" is such a subjective thing though as it can be anything from listening to an MP3 to using the phone as a wireless hotspot.

Certainly though, it trounces the SGS3 that I briefly had, that thing would start dropping noticeably as soon as it was unplugged, and needed charging without fail every night. The iPhone is much better when in standby.
